The joy of six: Williams plans to use different coloured caps for Cup jockeys

THE jockeys on Lloyd Williams's Melbourne Cup mounts will wear different coloured caps to distinguish their blue silks with white armbands.

IT IS an enviable problem to have: owner Lloyd Williams has informed Racing Victoria of the method he intends to use to distinguish his healthy contingent of runners in Tuesday’s $6.2m Melbourne Cup.

Williams’s Macedon Lodge could have up to six starters in the Cup, which would represent a quarter of the field. That would mean a cluster of six jockeys wearing navy blue silks with a white armband. To distinguish which horse is which, the jockeys would then wear six different coloured caps.

In racebook order – determined by which horse carries the most weight - the cap colours sported by Macedon Lodge riders will be; white, navy blue, royal blue, red, gold and pink. As it stands, Green Moon is Macedon Lodge’s top weight.

The other potential starters are: Fawkner (exempt from the ballot courtesy of his Caulfield Cup win), Sea Moon (fifth), Mourayan (16th), Seville (17th) and Masked Marvel (22).
