THE Everest will be beamed to a global audience of millions — including a live nationwide broadcast on Fox Sports in the United States — when it is run at Royal Randwick on Saturday afternoon.
Television coverage of the world’s richest race on turf will be to 150 countries around the world and capitalises on the global interest generated by the beaming of the barrier draw onto the sails of the Opera House this week.
Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys said the controversial screening of the jockeys’ colours and barrier numbers had seen the event covered worldwide including CNN and the BBC.
But coverage of the race itself, which has $13 million in prize money, will dramatically exceed those news reports, with Fox Sports 2 in the US on its own offering a potential audience of up to 50 million homes.
“The Opera House is an icon and to have the barrier draw shown on its sails really brings it home to the world that this is Sydney’s race,” US television racing correspondent Candice Hare said.
Hare has jetted into the Harbour City to anchor racing channel TVG’s coverage of the day’s racing to a potential audience of 60 million US homes.
“The Everest has certainly attracted a lot of attention in the US and when you see a lot of dollars on the line you know it is a big race,” she said.
TVG will also beam former One Direction star Liam Payne’s 45-minute concert at the end of the race day.
“We will also be showing the music. When you have a big-name performer it just drives home the point that this is a very prestigious race,” Hare said.
Payne was set to jet into Sydney late last night and head straight to The Stars, where he is basing himself for the duration of his stay.
Before arriving Down Under, the 25-year-old told The Daily Telegraph The Everest would be the first race day he has attended.
“I’ve never had the chance to go before, so I’m excited to go to my first real track in Australia,” he said.
Payne’s exclusive one-off concert is guaranteed to attract a great deal of attention among his 60 million social media followers worldwide.
It will also generate interest in his native England, where the best-selling Sun newspaper will be airing the race live to its 29 million digital subscribers.
Many of those will be tuning in to see world champion English jockey Ryan Moore, who is flying in to ride Coolmore Stud’s US Navy Flag in the big race.
Coolmore’s Tom Magnier said The Everest had attracted enormous international attention. “It is one of the most talked-about races around. There is a buzz surrounding this race that I haven’t seen before,” he said.
“You have got your Melbourne Cup, your Arc de Triomphe but this race is right up there. It’s got global recognition.
“In its second year it has become one of the biggest races in the world.”
Dubai’s ruler Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s enormous Godolphin racing and breeding operation in Australia has Osborne Bulls running in the Australian Turf Club’s $600,000 slot in The Everest.
“Just in our organisation this race has generated enormous attention from people all over the world,” Godolphin managing director Vin Cox said.
“In my experience I have never seen a racing event have such cut through with the general population.
“It is a big positive for NSW and Australia generally.”
