IT’S made headlines around the world and with just three sleeps to go, here’s everything you need to know about Sydney’s most anticipated racing event, The Everest.
THE NITTY GRITTY
For those keen to establish prime position on the finish, gates to Royal Randwick open nice and early at 10am for members and 10:30am for the public.
There are 10 races scheduled on the day, with the first horses off and racing 12:30pm.
The main event — The Everest race — is scheduled for 4:15pm with the final race of the day at 6:10pm.
GETTING THERE ... AND EVENTUALLY HOME!
To save yourself the panic of traffic (and a few bucks), public transport to and from the racecourse is included in your event ticket — that includes trains, buses, ferries and light rail services.
Shuttle buses are also running between Central Station and Randwick throughout the day.
ENTERTAINMENT
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last week, international superstar Liam Payne is the event’s special guest.
The former One Direction-er will perform a 45 minute exclusive set to wrap up celebrations in the Theatre of the Horse. And yes, it’s free for all ticket holders! Don’t have tickets? Get them HERE.
Australian model and songstress, Erin Holland, is singing the Australian National Anthem on the day.
WHAT TO WEAR?
For some, this is the most important question of all.
Although not widely publicised, punters are encouraged to incorporate splash of blue into their outfits.
Fashionistas are also tipping feminine bows, wide-brimmed hats and turban-style headbands to be a major hit at the carnival.
If you’re lucky enough score a ticket into any Members’ areas, are a few strict dress regulations to stick to.
While most of the don’ts are obvious — no ripped jeans, slippers or beanies — others have sparked controversy.
Men must not wear shoes without socks, no midriffs are to be showing and jumpsuits are on the blacklist.
If you’re still in need of some outfit guidance, here’s a generous list of ‘don’ts’:
- No joggers, sport shoes, thongs, scuffs, gumboots or slippers
- No jeans or denim, shorts, untailored pants or jumpsuits
- No torn or ripped clothing
- No midriffs showing
- No leggings worn as pants
- No parkas, duffel coats, windbreakers, tracksuit tops, denim jackets or anoraks
- No beanies or caps
- No rugby tops or football guernseys
If you’re planning on wearing a fancy dress costume or thongs prepare to have your access denied!
BEST DRESSED
For those who think they’ve got what it takes to take out the gong for best dressed, the Harrolds Fashion Chute will be set up on the Octagonal Lawn, where stylish racegoers can nominate themselves from 10am.
The competition will be judged by a panel of some of the fashion industry’s finest, with the winner announced at 3pm.
THE REAL STARS OF THE SHOW
Billed as the world’s richest race on turf, there are just 12 horses competing for the $13 million in prize money.
The Melbourne Cup generally has 24 runners, so your odds of picking a winner in The Everest are much better!
If you are interested in picking a horse based on anything other than the jokey silk colours, the hot favourites this year is reigning champion Redzel, Shoals, Trapeze Artist and Vega Magic.
The barrier draw for the main race was announced earlier this week with reigning champion Redzel taking top spot in barrier one.
So you can familiarise yourself before the big day, here’s a full list of the field:
BARRIER 1: Redzel
BARRIER 2: Shoals
BARRIER 3: US Navy Flag
BARRIER 4: Brave Smash
BARRIER 5: Osborne Bulls
BARRIER 6: Trapeze Artist
