Jockey Hugh Bowman forced to miss Randwick race meeting

Hugh Bowman will miss today’s Randwick races, including the feature Carrington Stakes, to spend time with his family.

The Banker: Off & Racing - January 23

Champion jockey Hugh Bowman has been forced to relinquish his seven rides at Royal Randwick today due to personal reasons.

It is understood there has been a family tragedy and that Bowman has made the decision to stand down from his rides.

Bowman had an outstanding book of rides including early favourites Rulership (race 1), Mr Wong (race 2) and Dabiyr (race 4).

He was also due to ride Cellarman in the feature race, the Listed $150,000 Carrington Stakes (race 7).

Racing NSW stewards confirmed Bowman contacted them earlier this morning and advised he would not be riding to be with family.

The Hall of Fame jockey has put family first previously, standing himself down during the Group 1 Australian Cup meeting at Flemington last year to catch the first available flight back to Sydney to attend to an urgent private matter.
