BEAT THE BOOKIE: VALUE BETS
ROSEHILL
SHAYNE O’CASS (Sportsman)
STABLE WATCH: INSIDE MAIL FOR ROSEHILL
THE BANKER: IMPENDING (Race 6, No. 7)
Is a son of the mighty Lonhro out of the dual Thousand Guineas and Queen of the Turf winner, Mnemosyne. Created a huge impression with a debut win at Rosehill before a luckless third in the Listed Ken Russell Memorial at the Gold Coast. He trialled like an atom bomb twice before his return in the Run To The Rose and wound-up in third behind stablemate Astern and Star Turn — again without much luck. He’s going to be just about guaranteed the box-seat from gate 2 and ‘The Gun’ (Brenton Avdulla) to ride, and he’s got an explosive turn of foot.
THE RISK: EL DIVINO (Race 6, No. 2)
Again. If he couldn’t win the Run to the Rose after co-trainer Gai Waterhouse declared him the winner ‘pure and simple’, then how is he going to win this?
BRAD DAVIDSON & SHAYNE O’CASS PREVIEW GOLDEN ROSE DAY
IN THE FRAME: RAVI and MAGIC ALIBI (Race 8, Nos 12 & 14)
Ravi is flying and ready for the big leagues now, even a deep and difficult stakes race like this. She’s not flash odds at $6 but we don’t make the market. As for the ‘bet’, why not couple her with $15 shot Magic Alibi, who is barely out of the midweeks, but boy oh boy, she’s been trialling like a Group horse.
JOCKEY: HUGH BOWMAN
Could deadset win the first four races on Saturday and one or two later on. I know we all said that last week and it never eventuated for ‘Huge’ but seven days is a long time in anything, just ask Sam Dastyari!
TRAINER: CHRIS WALLER
Can we just cut and paste these please — Waller. Here’s two big, big priced Waller chances — Four Carat ($26, Race 2, No. 6) and Mackintosh (My long range Epsom tip, Race 7, No. 7) who can win the Theo Marks, just like his famous stablemate, Winx, did last year — and she won the Epsom after that, too! Sppoky!
FLEMINGTON
MICHAEL MANLEY (Herald Sun)
THE EARLY OIL: FLEMINGTON
THE BANKER: BLACK HEART BART (Race 7, No. 3)
Won the Memsie Stakes with ease and takes on virtually the same field. Looks too good again.
THE RISK: PRINCE OF BROOKLYN (Race 4, No. 9)
Been racing consistently but has been up for a while now. Also, this looks slightly harder than recent runs.
IN THE FRAME: PILOTE D’ESSAI (Race 9, No. 13)
Should be suited by 1700m and Flemington. Gets his chance to break through.
JOCKEY: DWAYNE DUNN
Another Saturday and another great book for the Scobie Breasley Medal winner. O’Lonera (Race 1, No. 7), My Country (Race 2, No. 4), Good Standing (Race 3, No. 1), Hi World (Race 4, No. 2), Defcon (race 5, No. 1), Under The Louvre (Race 6, No. 1), Entirely Platinum (Race 7, No. 6), Don’t Doubt Mamma (Race 8, No. 2) and Pilote D’Essai (Race 9, No. 13) — all have good chances.
TRAINER: TEAM HAYES
The Hayes team should be in for a good day. They have numerous chances headed by Seaburge (Race 3, No. 2), Tashbeeh (Race 4, No. 3), Highland Beat (Race 5, No. 6), Faatinah (Race 6, No. 10), Rising Romance (Race 7, No. 12), Catch A Fire (Race 8, No. 3) and Pilote D’Essai (Race 9, No. 13).
DOOMBEN
NATHAN EXLEBY (The Courier-Mail)
THE BANKER: ANOTHER SLIPPER (Race 4, No. 9)
Scratched off the wet track last week, so overnight/race day rain is some concern, but if track isn’t overly affected, he can prove too classy for these. Brilliant last start win at Ipswich where he ran very quick time and did it comfortably.
THE RISK: LAND OFFICE (Race 5, No. 13)
Ran super figures last start, backing up his Sunshine Coast win, so no doubt he’s the one to beat. But strikes hotter field here and drawn to use some petrol early and possibly be vulnerable at the end.
IN THE FRAME: The staying races have looked tough on paper, but the smart punters are getting them right week after week. It’s $5 the field in the 2200m race (R3) this week, but don’t be afraid to follow in and back the market mover just before the jump.
NEW TEAM GETS WHIFF OF THE ROSE
HEAVY HEART WILL LEAVE PUNTERS MELANCHOLIC
JOCKEY: SARAH EILBECK
Continues to ride longshot winners, with Rocky King continuing the theme last week. Gets on a few more roughies at this meeting, in addition to Saluter (No. 1), who has class on his side in the first race.
TRAINER: TOBY EDMONDS
Is striking at 31 per cent in the metro area so far this season and can build on that record here. Bound For Love (No. 14) will run short in the last and Prompt Return (Race 5, No. 11) is a great chance to make it three on end for the stable. Fringe hopes also to Western Belle (Race 6, No. 13) and I’ll Take The Jag (Race 7, No. 10).
MORPHETTVILLE
LINCOLN MOORE (The Advertiser)
THE BANKER: CANALASSO (Race 7, No. 3)
Is a high-priced colt who won well back in class before a good run at Sandown. Looks well suited in the conditions and the Darren Weir stable have a great record when they come to Adelaide. Hard to beat.
IN THE FRAME: REFUSE TO LOSE (Race 3, No. 3)
Looks to have found a very winnable race here. He was a good Sandown winner prior and is sure to make his presence felt.
THE RISK: HEZA RIPPER (Race 5, No. 7)
Was impressive fighting off rivals here last time but steps up in class and is going to need a touch of luck here.
JOCKEY: HARRY COFFEY
Misses the ride on Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance to be in Adelaide riding Canalasso in the Morphettville Guineas and Magnus Reign (Race 5, No. 5) for Darren Weir, he also rides Refuse To Lose, Distant Rock (Race 4, No. 10), Princely Blaze (Race 6, No. 7) and Power Glen (Race 8, No. 8) who all have each-way appeal.
TRAINER: LEE and ANTHONY FREEDMAN
The Freedmans are always an imposing force when they come to Adelaide, Distant Rock has solid each-way appeal, while Matthew Poon rides Nicoscene (Race 5, No. 4).
