CONTROVERSIAL French jockey Gerard Mosse will partner Red Cadeaux in next month's Emirates Melbourne Cup.

Hong Kong-based Mosse drew the wrath of punters for his 2011 Melbourne Cup ride on 2010 Americain, after guiding the stayer to victory in the previous year's race.

He also copped flak for a substandard ride on Americain in the Group 1 BMW in Sydney in the autumn of 2012, but the mercurial horseman will return to Melbourne next week seeking to prove critics wrong.

Red Cadeaux has worked impressively at Werribee since arriving on Saturday.

Mosse guided the British globetrotting stayer to victory in the Hong Kong Vase in December.

Red Cadeaux will contest his third successive Melbourne Cup, having finished a desperately close second to Dunaden in 2011 and eighth to Green Moon last season.

Toorak Handicap runner-up Trevieres will aim at the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on Derby Day.

“The 2000m start at Flemington is the best at the track and it will suit him to have the long run to the first turn,” handler Stephanie Nigge said.

“And the distance on a flat track like that is ideal for him.”

Trevieres has been back on track this week after being restricted to walking exercise last week after suffering a muscle strain in his hindquarters.

“We’d thought about the Emirates Stakes for him but his work has been really good this week and the Mackinnon really looks like a good race for him,” Nigge said.

A host of highly credentialed internationals worked impressively, including Simenon and Mount Athos.
