THE ODDS
AS Michelle Payne became the first female jockey to win the Cup, the TAB confirmed Prince of Penzance had become the equal longest priced winner in the history of the race. Not since 1940 has a horse with odds of 101 to one taken the top prize, when Old Rowley crossed the line first.
Prior to 1940, such a feat had only been achieved twice, by Wotan in 1936 and first by The Pearl in 1871.
Off the back of the historic victory, one punter collected a total $252,000 return after having placed a $2000 bet at $126 just half an hour prior to the jump.
While Fame Game started the race as a $5.50 favourite to win, despite placing 13th the 6-year-old is currently placed as the favourite to take out the 2016 Melbourne Cup at $12.
