COWBOYS recruit Nene Macdonald has allegedly been assaulted in Papua New Guinea, just hours after representing the PNG Kumuls in their 32-22 victory over the England Knights.

Early reports suggest the winger was out celebrating with teammates when he was allegedly hit over the head with a bottle at Lamana Hotel in Port Moresby on Saturday night.

It is understood Macdonald is currently on his way back to Australia.

The Port Moresby-born Macdonald signed with the Cowboys early last month and a club spokesman said North Queensland were only made aware of the alleged incident late on Sunday afternoon but believe the 24-year-old is okay.

Nene MacDonald played with the Dragons in 2018 but will join the Cowboys in 2019.
