NRL 2019 squads named: Rosters released ahead of new season

FOR the first time ever the NRL has released the rosters of each NRL club as a number of sides make their returns to pre-season training. SEE EVERY SQUAD HERE

LCTV - NRL trade period kicks into overdrive

NEWCASTLE will be one of the busiest clubs in the open market with only 24 players listed on their roster for 2019 so far.

That’s set to increase by at least one as early as next week when David Klemmer makes his move to the Knights official. Canterbury maintain their representative forward is yet to ask for a release from the final two years of his contract at Belmore but it’s understood he is close to an agreement with Newcastle.

The Bulldogs’ 2019 squad is all but sewn up with 29 names already on their roster.

The appointments of Des Hasler, Ivan Cleary and Michael Maguire will likely have a ripple effect on the market once the new coaches have the opportunity to add their personal touches to their respective squads.

Manly submitted a 27-man squad on Friday but with Hasler now at the helm they have been undergoing a roster review. Up to two players currently contracted with the side could be let go in order to free enough salary cap space for some of Hasler’s recruitment targets.

New Penrith coach Ivan Cleary has very little wriggle room in his list at the moment. The Panthers only have one more spot up for grabs in their top 30. But that could change if forward Trent Merrin is granted an immediate release to join Leeds Rhinos in the English Super League

As part of an arrangement between the NRL and RLPA, all 16 clubs must have their initial 24-man rosters submitted by November 1.

The rosters released on Friday only show the players who are contracted in 2019. This means players like Cameron Smith, Tevita Pangai Junior and Jarryd Hayne don’t appear on any of the lists. Players will as added as deals are registered.

The next stage of submission requires clubs to submit a 29-man roster by March 1, then a finalised 30-man squad by June 30.

Clubs are also able to retain between three to six players on development contracts outside of the top 30. Up and coming Parramatta hooker Reed Mahoney, who played nine games this season, doesn’t appear in Brad Arthur’s 28-man roster but has been re-signed as development player.
