NRL Round 17 team lists: SuperCoach analysis, winners & losers as Coaches sweat on Origin stars

While a handful of Origin stars have been named to back up, a host could be rested after being named on an extended bench. See all the Winners and Losers from Round 17 teams.

SuperCoach NRL Podcast: Live Teams Reaction Round 17

State of Origin has again caused chaos with NRL coaches digging deep into their top-30 roster to plug multiple holes in the round 17 squad.

See every team list and change.

WINNERS FROM TEAMS

Bronson Xerri – Was a late out for the Bulldogs last week with illness but has been named to make a return, which is good news for the almost 12% of SuperCoaches who still own him.

Siosifa Talakai – A popular buy a few weeks ago, but many abandoned ship given the uncertainty over Teig Wilton. But in some good news for Talakai, Wilton has only named been named on the extended bench.

Mitch Barnett – Named to back up from Origin II, and should be in for big minutes given he is only the Blues 18th man and may not get on the field at all.

Will Pryce – Named to make his NRL debut at 5/8 but for SuperCoaches is available at CTW or FLB. One to watch as a possible buy in the coming weeks.

Kulikefu Finefeuiaki – Jeremiah Nanai is set to be rested after Origin II, so gets another call up into the starting side.

Luke Laulilii – A bottom dollar cheapie who impressed on debut for the Wests Tigers and has held his spot for Round 17. Not a purchase this week given job security isn’t great as Justin Olam is lurking on the extended bench and could be a late inclusion.

Adam Doueihi – Sticking with the Tigers and Doueihi looked sensational in his first NRL game in over 14-months. Playing at centre for the Tigers but only available at 5/8 for SuperCoach purposes, he could be one to consider buying in the coming weeks if he can keep up this form and hold a starting spot. As mentioned above Justin Olam could return this week and it remains to be seen how the backline looks when he is back, but presumably he pushes Brent Naden to the wing or out of the side.

Jesse Arthars – Named to make his return from a broken jaw and remains in over 5% of SuperCoach teams despite not playing since Round 9. Break-even is 79 so he could be set for a drop in cash but does have a solid matchup against the Warriors, who just conceded 66 points to the Titans.

Maika Sivo – Named to make his return from a hamstring injury. A bit of an enigma for SuperCoach, but has a season average of 69.7. But given his hefty price tag, probably one to avoid.

Matt Arthur – Matt will become the second son of former Eels coach Brad Arthur to make an NRL debut, after staring for NSW in the Under 19’s State of Origin. A bench hooker hardly screams buy but he could be one to watch in the coming weeks if he can hold a spot.

Jordan Martin – Named to make his NRL debut off the bench for Canberra, this 2RF could be one to watch in the coming weeks.

Terrell May – Was named to start last week and after getting through 80 minutes in the front row, is once again named to start. Could be in for big minutes once again with Lindsay Collins and Spencer Leniu named on the bench as they back up from Origin.

Origin stars named to back up: Mitch Moses, Harry Grant, Zac Lomax, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Dylan Edwards, Brian To’o, Jarome Luai, Liam Martin, Angus Crichton, Connor Watson, Spencer Leniu, Xavier Coates, Ben Hunt Jaydn Su’A and Felise Kaufusi have all been named to back up from State of Origin. But be sure to check late mail as they could yet be late withdrawals, especially if they pick up injuries on Wednesday night.

SuperCoach NRL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 17

LOSERS FROM TEAMS

Shaun Johnson – Expected to be out for four weeks with an Achilles injury. Not very highly owned anyway but a must sell if you have held.

Kai Pearce-Paul – Named to make his return from a toe injury but via the interchange. He could still be a late inclusion into the starting side, but the Knights edge forward rotation has been a bit unpredictable in recent weeks so looms as a sell.

Sua Faalogo – Drops out of the starting 17 for Melbourne but is still lurking on an extended bench. The worst outcome for SuperCoaches would be if he wins a spot on the bench and becomes an AE nightmare.

Jack Bostock – Out for the Dolphins after suffering a nasty headknock in Round 16.

Jeremiah Nanai – A confirmed resting from Origin, Nanai will not play for the Cowboys in Round 17, regardless of how he pulls up after the game.

Nick Meaney – Out for Melbourne after suffering a calf injury in Round 16.

J’Maine Hopgood – Remains sidelined with a back injury and set to meet with specialists in the coming days to see if he requrices surgery that could see his season over. Bad news for the Eels star and the 10.7% of SuperCoaches who still own him.

Benched Origin stars – Stephen Crichton, Reece Walsh, Pat Carrigan, Payne Haas, Valentine Holmes, Murray Taulagi, Tom Dearden, Reece Robson and Reuben Cotter have all been named among the extended bench and could yet play in Round 17 if they pull up okay from State of Origin. But as it stands they are not in the starting 17’s for their teams and could miss out.

BUY

Briton Nikora – The return of Nicho Hynes from Origin duty was the spark that ignited Nikora in round 15. Priced at $570K there’s real value here and provided you can cover his absence in round 20 then there’s a strong argument for bringing in the hole-running Kiwi.

Ronaldo Mulitalo – The return of Hynes is good for all of Cronulla’s attacking players and Braydon Trindall’s return on the left is good for Mulitalo in particular too. Mulitalo and Trindall have played nine games together on the left edge of the Sharks and from those nine games the fiery winger averages 77.7PPG with six games of 70+ and just one sub-50 point effort. Mulitalo has played five games without Trindall and in that span he averaged just 47.4PPG with no games of 70+ and three sub-50 scores. As mentioned above the Sharks still have one bye left to come (round 20) but around that they have a pretty sweet draw which includes the Titans (twice), Tigers, Rabbitohs, Knights, Dragons and Warriors. All positive match-ups for Mulitalo.

Fletcher Sharpe – The Armstrong killer, Sharpe has been a revelation for the Knights since he was brought into the team in round 14. An average of 67PPG over two starts for a rookie is very very good. When those two teams were the Storm and the Panthers it is outstanding. With the Knights covering round 19 and round 20, Sharpe is a great buy that you could then cash out after 19 or 20 at around a $150K (conservatively) price rise. I say conservative because Newcastle play the Eels then Raiders in their next two matches and Sharpe could easily have added $150K after those two games alone.

HOLD

Jamayne Isaako – A popular buy – Isaako is the fourth most purchased player heading into the round – on which I have a couple of red flags. I’m not saying Isaako is a ‘bad’ buy. He’s a winger averaging 70PPG with a great nose for the line and kicks goals too. Those are all positive attributes. The Dolphins also cover round 19 and 20 which is a bonus. But there are some slight red flags around the draw too. The Dolphins are on a bye in round 18 and then their remaining draw features tough defensive outfits like the Panthers, Roosters, Bulldogs, Storm and Broncos. $614K is still a nice price for a 70PPG average but if I could buy only one CTW this week then I’d prefer Mulitalo.

Nicho Hynes – Now this is a big call. Perhaps the biggest of the round. The Sharks are coming into this game, on Friday night, well rested after the bye. The Bulldogs come into the game having conceded 26 points to the Roosters, without their fullback Connor Tracey and with their talismanic skipper Stephen Crichton sure to be banged and bruised after playing Origin on Wednesday night. Which brings us to Hynes. Dropped from the NSW team and undoubtedly having a point to prove, Hynes is a must own in SuperCoach. But is this the week to buy him? Hynes scored just three points against the Panthers (due to injury) in round 12 and as a result he has a BE this week of 212. Not even St Nicho can scale that mountain so if you buy him this week you are paying more than you will the following week. How much more? Well, at a guess I’d say about $100K more. That $100K will go a long way to upgrading another player later in the year. And I figure provided you can field a solid seventeen this week then you wait a week on Hynes. But don’t wait too long, Cronulla face the Titans then Tigers in rounds 18/19 and you’ll want the wet prince of the Sutherland Shire in your team for those games.

Blaize Talagi – Talagi is among the most sold players this week and given his break-even is 85 and he will likely start leaking cash soon, it makes a lot of sense. But he has seemingly locked down a wing spot for now and covers the all important Round 19 bye I cant help but think he is one to hold on to, even if he does cop a few price drops. Wouldn’t blame anyone for moving him on if they’re in a good spot for Round 19, but if not he is a hold for mine.

SELL

Sua Fa’alogo – The return of Ryan Papenhuyzen puts a pin in Fa’alogo’s value. The Storm do have a couple of juicy match-ups in the next two though (Raiders into the Tigers) and if money is no object – and he is selected to start on the wing – then I suppose you could make a case for keeping him. But there’s a real risk Melbourne move Fa’alogo back to a super sub role and if so he’ll start to leak cash fast.

David Armstrong – Out of a job and out of favour (seemingly) at the club. Must go.

Lehi Hopoate – With a BE of 5 there’s still a little more money to be made but Manly are on a bye this week and Tom Trbojevic is tipped to return post-bye which threatens Hopoate’s job security. Take the money and run.

With Manly on the bye and a Tom Trbojevic return on the horizon its time to move on from Lehi Hopoate. Picture: Getty Images

Josh Curran – The hard working Bulldog had a stinker in the pouring rain against the Roosters with four errors in 42 minutes which limited him to just 34 points. Curran scored just 28 points in round 14 (a failed HIA limited him to 16 minutes in that game) and so faces a BE of 101 this week. I won’t try to talk anyone out of the sell but at this stage I’m planning to hold Curran as a handy floating 2RF/FRF emergency.

Joe Chan – The 16.1% of SuperCoaches who still own Chan are in a bit of a conundrum. He is playing off the bench for Melbourne, but with a 5RA of 19.8 has become an auto emergency nightmare. The problem is there aren’t a tonne of solid options to trade down to. Tigers rookie Reuben Porter could be one to bring in as a quick cash grab who likely becomes a nuff in the coming weeks or if you have the right dual positions you could flick him into a CTW or fullback like Fletcher Sharpe. But with a BE of 48 he is just gonna keep losing cash and stinking up your bench if you hold.
