NRL Schoolboy Cup: Patrician Brothers Blacktown defeat Westfields Sports High 24-16

Patrician Brothers Blacktown have unleashed their own mini Moses Leota — and he’s just as damaging.

Big Tevita Alatini barged over to ice his school’s 24-16 win over Westfields Sports High School in Round 2 of the NRL Schoolboy Cup.

Alatini, a member of Penrith’s Harold Matts Cup side, was pleased with his side’s performance on Wednesday.

“Everyone worked hard. Our 10, John Sagaga, he’s always such a leader in our team,” Alatini said. “And Ethan Sanders, he completely controlled that game, like he always does.”

The prop said he tried to channel his NRL idol Leota in the big showdown at Aubrey Keech Reserve.

“I look up to Moses Leota, his energy, I try to bring that to my game,” Alatini said.

Patties’ halfback Sanders had a blinder, he scored a double, set up tries, defended well and put up a dirty torpedo.

Sagaga was also a handful, showing off what he has learnt from training with Penrith’s Jersey Flegg side. But don’t let the scoreboard fool you. It was a tough and tight contest.

Westfields led at halftime and they had a couple of good opportunities to catch up at the end.

Roy Quiroz-Mapusua and Cooper Sinclair were constant threats.

Halfback Lachlan Galvin was strong too, scoring his second try in his second NRL Schoolboy Cup match for Westfields.

“It was good to get another try. It’s been fun, I’ve always wanted to play,” Galvin said.

“We’ve got work to do. We’ve got to hold the ball more, be more disciplined in attack and defence. We need to give away less penalties.”

Patties’ fullback Wilson De Courcey opened the scoring, thanks to a slick offload from Pharrell Zimmerman.

Westfields responded with first-half tries to Galvin and forward Sam Tuivati.

Sanders was next to score, crossing off his own kick. Westfields led 12-8 at half time.

Second-half tries to Sanders, Nicholas and Alatini pushed Patties ahead and the boys from Blacktown were able to hold off a late Westfields surge.

Centre Quiroz-Mapusua was rewarded for his efforts with a late try, but it wasn’t enough and Patrician Brothers finished on top 24-16.

Heading into Round 3 of the NRL Schoolboy Cup, Westfields will play Endeavour Sports High, and Patrician Brothers Blacktown will take on The Hills Sports High.
