Wavell State High will have the weight of a local community on their side as the school kicks off the ‘closest ever’ Langer Trophy season against rivals Ipswich State High.
Wavell will host the Tuesday night showdown as part of its annual ‘Homecoming Day’ festivities on the school’s oval.
The day celebrates past and present students at the proud nursery which has produced notable NRL, state and international stars since the 1970s like David Wright, Bob Cock, Darryl Brohman, Greg Inglis, the Nikorima brothers and Adam Blair.
The clash between Wavell and Ipswich State High will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV and the Courier Mail as part of a big opening night double header along with the Walters Cup (Year 10) clash from 5.15pm.
It also kicks off a massive first round of the Langer Trophy, with many tipping this season to be the tightest run race in its history due to a revitalised finals structure.
This season the Langer Trophy will see only the top five sides qualify for the semi-finals. Previously all teams were involved in a playoff series.
Ipswich coach Joshua Bretherton said the competition was the closest in his 16 years involved in schoolboy rugby league.
“The strength of the competition is the strongest it has ever been,” Bretherton said.
Wavell SHS coach Paul Stanley echoed Bretherton’s sentiment.
Bretherton said the race for the premiership was wide open, with last year’s seventh-placed Redcliffe State High considered genuine title contenders this season.
“It is not just two or three quality teams and four or five very good teams, it is a collection of genuine, quality sides,’’ Bretherton said.
Wavell coach Stanley said as a result of the new finals’ format, starting well was essential in the seven round season.
“Our first four games before the holidays are against teams which have been on top of the ladder the last few seasons,” he said.
“You can’t afford to be dropping games early.’’
The Langer Trophy will be exclusively live streamed on the Courier Mail and across all News Corp Australia digital mastheads as part of KommunityTV’s unbeaten coverage of the NRL Schools League competitions.
