Hayden Watson did everything but blow the referee’s whistle as Marsden SHS drew first blood with a big 54-10 win over debut boys Stretton State College.
Watson, playing halfback instead of hooker, ran and passed his way to a nine and a half out of 10 performance.
His outstanding performance included:
– Scoring the first try with a swan dive over the top of Stretton defenders, and also tip-toed his way over for a second try;
– with a jink, change of angle and a turn of pace, Watson then delivered a bullet pass, opening up a channel for his centre Antonio Okusitino to put winger Jeremiah Toko over;
– Watson delivered a super pass to put his centre Okusitino across to score;
– Watson twice delivered kicks for his second rower Mace Andrew to score a double;
– Watson made an incredible try saving tackle on the line when Stretton seemed certain to score;
Oh, did we mention Watson also kicked for touch and did the goal kicking (seven goals).
Seriously, the Melbourne Storm will be well pleased with their investment in the Marsden SHS ace.
While Marsden led 30-nil at halftime, there were plenty of green shoots for a spirited Stretton who gained parity in the last quarter of the game.
Right winger Amen Tu’aefe looked class, forwards Lewis Gardiner and Bailey Vang were inspiring, and fullback Lexin Hill had plenty to offer.
Seconds from halftime, the Stretton bench roared and cheered some more when clever hooker Vang kicked ahead for his winger Tu’aefe who scored his team’s historic first try.
Later in the match, right centre Kayzon Key also scored an enterprising try as Stretton rallied.
Scores: Marsden SHS 54 (H Watson 2, M Andrew 2, T To’a, A Okusitino, T Toko, C Cresswell, M Falaniko, A Luke tries; H Watson 7 goals) defeated Stretton State College 10 (A Tu’aefe, K Key tries, K Key goal)
REPLAYS
Stretton State College v Marsden SHS (Schoolgirls Cup) – 2025 Langer Trophy Round 1
Marsden SHS produced a ruthless round one performance, unseating a desperately undermanned Stretton State College by 62-nil.
In an emphatic performance, Marsden SHS’s power game early gave way to an athletic masterclass as No.13 Deleni Paitai spearheaded a performance which unravelled their rivals, 34-nil, by halftime.
With bodies in motion, right side half Evelyn Roberts ran amok while Paitai’s left side forays were too hot to handle.
The service from hooker Enah Desic was again superb in aiding her team’s rampage, while centre ace Leilani Taofinuu triggered alarm bells with every touch.
The Stretton players, without the support of an interchange bench and down to 12 players in the second half, tried so hard to stem the tide.
Te Rina Pearse tried so hard to lift Stretton, but Marsden’s power, precision and pace overwhelmed their gallant efforts.
While Marsden SHS’s starting side fired, so did their interchange bench.
Indeed Mya Tronc and Elisa Asomau were enormous on both sides of the ball and thoroughly deserved their tries.
Scores: Marsden SHS 62 (N Gesa 2, D Paitai 2 tries; L Taofinuu R Lefono, E Roberts, M Tronc, E Asomau, S Ibrahim, R Henry-Purcell tries, E Desic 7 goals) defeated Stretton State College 0
Mountain Creek v Marsden – 2025 Walters Cup Round 1
PREVIEW
Regardless of how the game plays out, Stretton State College’s opens rugby league team will have done their friends, family and school community proud when they make their Langer Trophy debut.
The Stretton Storm will receive a baptism of fire on Wednesday night when facing off against last year’s runners up Marsden State High.
But the chance to play the best Queensland school football has to offer is what they have been striving for since its rugby league academy was created in 2019.
The Langer Trophy and Queensland NRL Schoolgirl Cup clashes between Stretton and Marsden – plus Mountain Creek v Marsden in the Walters Cup – will be exclusively live streamed here on KommunityTV.
Since the academy’s inception, no team has progressed into the top-flight Langer Trophy competition but that all changed when this year’s giant killers got up over Caloundra State High in a frantic qualifying bout in Stafford.
“We’ve been working on this for years,” Stretton skipper Lewis Gardner said, after the 20-18 nailbiter against the Seahawks.
“I’ve been at this school since I was in Primary School (prep) and since the academy started (2019). It has always been a big goal for this school, to break into the top competition.
“It’s a really big relief that we’ve finally got here.”
Gardner’s troops have become accustomed to must-win matches at Stafford Brothers. In 2023, as Year 10s, Stretton edged out Ipswich State High to earn their place in the Walters Cup competition.
Last year, they couldn’t repeat the dose to get into the top competition.
“We’ve been in these qualifying games for a few years now and we’ve fallen short year after year,” Gardner reflected.
“We made the top competition (Walters Cup) in Year 10, then last year we fell short.
“We’ve had a year off, a year to train and get back into it. It’s a huge credit to all these boys coming in week in and week out, training and working our arses off and finally getting the reward we always looked for.”
Gardner said the friendship and camaraderie between the coaches and players was a big reason behind the team achieving this first in school history.
“We are a really tight friend group,” he said.
“We do things outside of school, inside of school. We’ve been tight this whole high schooling journey.
“It’s special to win this as a group, with the same coaches who have been here the whole time.
“It’s a really big credit to those coaches (Rhys Jacks, Jayden Best, Brandon Khuu) that have stuck by us since day dot.
“It’s a really good feeling to finally give them the reward they deserve.”
Marsden will welcome Stretton for a 4.30pm kick-off where, led by four Queensland Schoolboys selects, they will be looking to start the season strong.
Edge forward Taylan To’a, prop Mace Andrew, lock Tupou Francis and halve Hayden Watson will all wear maroon in Coffs Harbour this July when the rugby league national championships kick off.
