NRL Transfer Centre: Player movement ahead of 2019 season

Wayne Bennett has secured his first signing for South Sydney, luring Cowboys premiership forward Ethan Lowe to the Rabbitohs.

As first revealed by The Courier-Mail, North Queensland have released Lowe from his contract to sign with the Rabbitohs immediately.

Lowe is Bennett’s first acquisition at the Rabbitohs since the seven-time premiership winner joined the NRL club after being sacked by Brisbane.

Lowe, 27, was a star on the rise for the Cowboys after playing in the club’s historic maiden NRL premiership in 2015.

He was on the cusp of State of Origin selection for the next two seasons, even spending time in Maroons camp to get accustomed to the Queensland set up.

However, Lowe went off the boil big time last year, playing only 15 NRL games after he was dropped by coach Paul Green.

“He has a number of strings to his bow which will benefit our squad and he is an edge back rower who will create more competition for spots in our back row throughout the season,” said South Sydney general manager Shane Richardson.

“He will have an opportunity to put his best foot forward under Wayne (Bennett) here at Souths and we’re all looking forward to seeing what he can achieve in red and green.”
