SuperCoach scores, news and analysis from Manly vs Warriors, Roosters vs Eels

Two of the most popular fullbacks in SuperCoach went for centuries, but it was the return to form of Dom Young that is making waves. See the SC Winners and Losers from Friday Night Footy.

SuperCoach NRL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 24

Friday Night Footy can be summed up in two parts, pre-rain and post-rain.

The deluge came midway through the second half of Manly vs New Zealand, and it left Allianz Stadium resembling a swimming pool for Roosters vs Eels.

Still, there were some big SuperCoach scores to be had across the board with many putting their faith in Tom Trbojevic and James Tedesco to accrue double points before Super Saturday.

Here are the SuperCoach Winners and Losers from Friday Night Footy:

SUPERCOACH WINNERS

1. Dom Young (127) – There were big concerns about his fitness coming into this clash, but owners had nothing to worry about with the English international scoring a hat-trick and piling on a monster score.

2. James Tedesco (115) – A great night for the skipper and for those who opted to captain him, finishing with two try assists and a try. Could’ve had a second if not for an incredible trysaving effort from Maika Sivo.

3. Tom Trbojevic (103) – Many kept the faith and left the C on Turbo despite it being just the second game of the weekend. Those people will be happy enough with that decision on the back of a try and two try assists.

4. Brandon Smith (81) - Two try assists in the first half set the tempo for a very strong outing from the Cheese. Just his second score of the season above 64 so those who have stuck with him will be pleased.

5. Jason Saab (89) – He looked like he was back to his best form and could’ve had a try assist if a kick infield came to fruition. Nevertheless he scored a try and put a very strong score on the board.

6. Kelma Tuilagi (74) – Scored a first half try but he gave the Eels a much-needed injection of energy when he came off the interchange. In a 16-minute stint in the first half he piled on an incredible 51 points.

7. Addin Fonua-Blake (77) – Finished with a try assist to go on top of his usual strong base stats. You know what you’re going to get from the future Shark every time he runs out there. Typically solid.

8. Joey Manu (77) – Put on a nice try assist for Dom Young in the corner and was able to score SC points in a variety of ways tonight. It’s clear he’s very close to his best once again.

9. Joe Ofahengaue (63) – The budget buy continues to punch above his weight with a few nice scores in recent weeks. 46 points from tackles shows how hard he worked tonight.

10. Joey Lussick (49) – Lussick is priced at a tick over the minimum and he was able to pack a lot of punch in his 22 minutes off the bench. Scored a try, earned his team a key penalty and tried his heart out.

SUPERCOACH LOSERS

1. Blaize Talagi (12) – It’s been a superb year for the young gun, but tonight just wasn’t his night as the Roosters well and truly had his measure out on an edge.

2. Jake Tago (4) – Came off the field after 50 minutes and on a very tough night for Parramatta’s outside backs he was virtually unseen at any stage.

3. Brendan Hands (9) – Spent time in the sin bin, albeit controversially, but he was well held all night by the Roosters on a pretty lacklustre night from the starting hooker.

4. Dylan Brown (30) – Hasn’t scored below the half century mark since all the way back in round four, but this was a brutal watch for SuperCoach owners of Brown as he failed to make anything happen.

5. Luke Metcalf (20) – Was his first game back since round four so you can’t be too critical, but a few errors and missed opportunities amounted to a tough evening for the young half.

6. Ethan Bullemor (20) – Played just the 22 minutes off the bench as Anthony Seibold put the faith in his starters to get the job done. That naturally had an impact on his output.

7. Angus Crichton (45) – His run of four scores of 99 or more in the space of six weeks seems a distant memory for those who opted to keep the Gus Bus as opposed to hopping off.

8. Connor Watson (10) – Was wiped out of the game early, failing a HIA after being hit with a shoulder to the head. Will spend a week on the sidelines as a result of the nasty incident.

9. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck (43) – Is it his fault for not getting involved enough or is he simply playing out of position? Whatever the case it feels like a Ferrari is being left in the garage with RTS in the centres.

10. Mitch Barnett (45) – Has been such a reliable front rower from a SuperCoach perspective, but even his staunchest owners will be disappointed with his score tonight.

HEAVENS OPEN UP AS ROOSTERS HEAP MORE PAIN ON PARRA

Martin Gabor

League legend Corey Parker has savaged the Allianz Stadium surface which resembled an “aquatic centre” as the Roosters kept their heads above water to remain in the hunt for a top-two finish.

The Roosters were always in control in their dominant 38-14 win over the Eels to move within two points of the Panthers, and you can only imagine what the score would have been if the field wasn’t covered in puddles.

A powerful storm swept through Penrith on Thursday, but it was a deluge of a different kind in the CBD as 8mm of rain and deafening thunder provided the locals with some unexpected pre-game entertainment.

The storm didn’t last long but Allianz Stadium gave the impression that Sydney had been soaked all week with puddles everywhere you looked which is surprising given the venue is only two years old and should have better drainage.

“They’re certainly not the conditions that you’d expect at a stadium like that after so much money has been put into it,” Parker said on Fox League.

“I understand there was a fair downpour, but that is diabolical.”

RED HOT ROOSTERS

It may have been wet but the Roosters were on fire as they showed why they boast the best attack in the NRL this season.

Dom Young bagged a hat-trick on the right wing after overcoming a hamstring injury, and he had plenty of support on Friday with James Tedesco and Brandon Smith both finishing with two assists each.

Sam Walker was also at his brilliant best with a trademark chip over the top for Sitili Tupouniua to score in his 100th game.

SIN BIN FRIDAY

The Roosters will be without lock forward Connor Watson next week after the Blues rookie was knocked out of the contest as a result of an ugly shot from Wiremu Greig.

Watson was being held upright in a tackle by two Eels defenders before Greig charged in and whacked him in the head with a tackle that will likely earn the ire of the match review committee.

The forceful shot to the head will keep Watson out of next week’s trip to the Gold Coast after the Bunker deemed it a category one head knock.

Greig wasn’t the only Parramatta player to spend 10 minutes off the field, with Brendan Hands marched early in the second half for a professional foul which was punished a few plays later by Young who slid over for his second try.

Skipper Clint Gutherson is also in trouble after he was placed on report for kicking Tedesco as he tried to toe through a loose ball in the first half, while the Roosters lost Naufahu Whyte to the sin bin for a professional foul.

FULL-TIME - Roosters 38-14

With not much doing in the very last seconds of the game, Joey Lussick catches out some lazy defenders around the ruck and scores to give the Eels the last two tries of the night.

He had a good night after coming off the bench.

The match was a foregone conclusion pretty early on, but Parramatta had a crack for the entire 80, but just found the Roosters too classy.

Here are the top SuperCoach scores from full-time:

Roosters vs Eels - top SuperCoach full-time scores

70th minute - Roosters 38-8

It’s now the Roosters time to spend 10 minutes with 12 men.

After the Eels were awarded a penalty in their own half, Joey Lussick took the quick tap and caught Naufahu Whyte clearly offside and he is marched.

They have another moment to cheer with Sean Russell getting across the line for Parramatta’s second try of the evening.

He touches down in the corner after Will Penisini did a good job of holding the defence up.

60th minute - Roosters 38-4

Make that four tries for the Roosters tonight while the Eels have had 12 men on the field.

Sam Walker scouted the play beautifully, putting a little chip over the top of the defensive line with Clint Gutherson in it, and Sitili Tupouniua scores in his 100th game.

It’s a nice moment for the second rower who will leave for the Bulldogs next season.

Joe Ofahengaue has a brain explosion and wipes out Sam Walker late after a kick that gives the Roosters great field position.

They spread the ball right once again and Dom Young has his third try of the night after stepping inside and shrugging off the defence.

To make matters worse, the Eels kick out on the full from the kick-off.

50th minute - Roosters 28-4

If they took any momentum into the second half, it has swiftly evaporated for the Eels with a horror start.

A knock on in their own territory was compounded with a set restart, and then a sin bin after Brendan Hands continued to hold down Brandon Smith.

From the next set Dom Young has his second try of the night with a quick shift to the right to touch down just before being bundled into touch.

HALFTIME - Roosters 24-4

Parramatta has some possession in Roosters territory and they are finally on the board with Kelma Tuilagi hitting a short ball to get through the tackle of Joey Manu to score.

They needed that one to keep their heads up going into the sheds.

Naufahu Whyte comes up with a shocker of a challenge two minutes from the half to see them burn it for no reason at all.

The Eels have certainly tried hard, but the sin bin proved extremely costly as they face a big mountain to get back into the game in the second half.

Here are the top SuperCoach scores at halftime:

30th minute - Roosters 24-0

Strong play from Daniel Tupou.

He’s put into space down the sideline and gets through three defenders, keeping his ball-carrying arm off the ground to reach out and score.

That’s two tries now with Wiremu Greig off the field.

Connor Watson has been ruled out for the game as a result of the high shot, meaning 18th man Sandon Smith can now come into the game.

In a play that will excite many SuperCoaches, James Tedesco slices through the line, dummies at fullback Clint Gutherson and goes himself to score and push the lead out to 24.

20th minute - Roosters 12-0

Wiremu Greig is spending time in the sin bin for a nasty high shot on Connor Watson. He didn’t miss him with a shoulder straight to the head.

He has come off for a HIA unsurprisingly.

They need just two tackles to extend the margin with Joey Manu getting a flick pass onto Dom Young who finishes strongly with a nice diving effort in the corner.

The Roosters continue to apply pressure as the Eels fail to get through their sets.

10th minute – Roosters 6-0

Incredible start with plenty of surface water at Allianz Stadium.

Spencer Leniu drops it on just the second tackle of the game to give the Eels a shot at a perfect start, but they can’t take it.

There’s been plenty of errors early on in this one, none worse than Dom Young being nutmegged by a grubber and getting a touch on the ball before it went into touch.

Leniu makes up for his early mistake by getting low from close range and proving impossible to stop as he dives over.

8PM: Action is underway at a wet Allianz Stadium.

Will it be the Roosters marching towards locking in a top four spot or can the Eels cause a massive upset?

MANLY KEEP TOP FOUR DREAM ALIVE WITH WIN OVER WARRIORS

Matt Cleary

It loomed as a banana skin game for Manly Sea Eagles at Four Pines Park on Friday night, and it appeared it could be until Tom Trbojevic did a Tom Trbojevic.

While his stats were typically impressive – 196 metres, six tackle breaks, two line break assists, two try assists – it was his presence that created possibility in his team’s 24-10 win over New Zealand Warriors.

The Manly Sea Eagles have kept their top four hopes alive with a win over the New Zealand Warriors. Picture: NRL Imagery

His first half try came when Luke Brooks dummied to him inside, picked up Tommy Talau who made a break and found the big fullback streaming down field to go under the posts.

He set up Lehi Hopoate in the second half when all eyes were on him before throwing a cut-out pass for the game-sealing score.

CHERRY ON TOP

The Warriors had 95 per cent of possession in the first 10 minutes but a 40/20 by Daly Cherry-Evans saw the Sea Eagles open the scoring when Jason Saab crossed out wide.

Three times Cherry-Evans’ razor-sharp instincts and skill set the speedy Saab free on the blindside.

With scores tied 10-all in the 53rd minute, a pinpoint Cherry Evans’ bomb saw Reuben Garrick fly high over New Zealand Warriors fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and score.

The Warriors had turned up to Brookvale in dangerous fashion – hopes of finals shot, nothing to lose, nothing to do but play. Their brilliant halfback, Shaun Johnson, would be playing his second last game in Sydney.

Yet in front of their seventh sellout crowd in their last nine home games – and after withstanding a period in the second half that featured torrential rain and sheets of lightning – Manly were ultimately too strong.

The win sees the Sea Eagles comfortably inside the top-eight on 31 points.

DECISIONS, DECISIONS

In the first half, centre Adam Pompey crossed for the Warriors and Luke Metcalf had all but started in to convert when Kasey Badger in the bunker found an obstruction by Kurt Capewell.

After Shaun Johnson scored from a marginal Addin Fonua-Blake offload, the luck continued going the Warriors’ way when Nicoll-Klokstad passed from the ground and Hopoate was ruled to have knocked on while facing his own line.

Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans kicked a 40/20 early and controlled the game well from there. Picture: NRL Imagery

When a Pompey knock-on was ruled too soon following a Manly one to gain advantage, most of the sold out crowd of 17,333 loudly disagreed.

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak’s patented flying try in the southwestern corner meant there were shades of the team’s golden point draw in Auckland in round six.

As the teams went off the field 10-all, referee Grant Atkins was booed loudly.

Reports

Josh Aloiai was on report for a shot on Nicoll-Klokstad that saw the fullback emerge with a bloody nose. Ben Trbojevic was also put on report for a high shot on Marata Niukore. Garrick was put on report for a hip-drop on Nicoll-Klokstad.

SEA EAGLES VS WARRIORS

FULL-TIME - Sea Eagles 24-10

It wasn’t pretty and there were some nervous moments at times for the Sea Eagles, but they are very much alive in the race for the top four.

A crusher on Nathan Brown in the final minutes gave Manly an easy shot at two points and they happily accept it.

They scored the only points of the second half as the heavens opened in a big way to deny a Warriors side that showed plenty of grit, but lacked the polish to take advantage of their many chances.

Here are the top SuperCoach scores from full-time:

70th minute - Sea Eagles 22-10

Smart play from Dylan Walker to tell his teammate to let go so he can pull off a one-on-one strip.

The Warriors fumble the ball after receiving a pair of set restarts however.

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is either a fibber or the rain is getting to him, as he gets up cheering after dropping a kick over the line.

With this level of rain you want to be down the other end. Manly is showing why by continually dropping the ball.

They eventually force a mistake of their own and Lehi Hopoate is over for another try in his rookie season after Tom Trbojevic put a lovely pass on his chest to beat his marker.

60th minute - Sea Eagles 16-10

The rain is starting to tumble at Brookie and people are scurrying for cover on the hill.

A bomb also comes down on the Warriors and they are unable to take it as a flying Reuben Garrick leaps high and snatches it from Marcelo Montoya to put the Sea Eagles back in front.

No team has been able to put two consecutive tries together in this game.

Daly Cherry-Evans pulls our a spectacular play, putting in a grubber when he was cornered and then he pushed Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad into touch.

Manly spoils his smarts by dropping it on second tackle.

50th minute - 10-all

It’s been a positive start to the half from the Warriors, much like they started the game.

They’ve been winning the territory battle so far and have done a good job in defence to keep the Sea Eagles pinned in their own half.

Referee Chris Butler has revived the downtown penalty out of nowhere. The Warriors could’ve taken the easy two points but opt to run it.

However they spill it on tackle two.

7PM: The Eels have made a couple of late changes as they look to cause one of the upsets of the season against the Roosters.

Joe Ofahengaue (2RF/FRF $431,100) will start at lock in place of Ryan Matterson, and Maika Sivo (CTW $653,700) comes onto the bench.

Siua Wong (2RF $324,900) is the only late change for the tricolours, coming onto the bench in jersey #19.

A win would go a long way to ensuring the Roosters finish in the top four and they are heavily favoured to do just that.

HALFTIME - 10-all

The Warriors have had more opportunities to attack on the back of a heap of set restarts and the pressure eventually tells with Dallin Watene-Zelezniak putting together a spectacular put-down in the corner.

They’ve shown a good intensity in this first half and they can certainly cause a boilover if they’re able to maintain it in the second half.

30th minute - Sea Eagles 10-4

If the Warriors felt hard done by with the previous call, they can let it slide after Shaun Johnson crosses on the back of a very suspect offload from Addin Fonua-Blake.

The departing front rower got his arm free after breaking through some soft tackles to get the visitors on the board.

Luke Metcalf sprays the relatively easy kick wide of the posts to keep the scores level.

That scoreline quickly shifts back to a favourable one for Manly with a great play from Luke Brooks.

He sells dummies and eventually finds a surging Tommy Talau who hits a huge gap before passing inside to Tom Trbojevic for a try that has the fans up and about.

They almost go back-to-back as Jason Saab makes a break down the sideline, only for his kick going into touch.

20th minute - Sea Eagles 4-0

Manly is starting to go through its gears and is spending more time down in Warriors territory.

An error from Tom Trbojevic lets the visitors off the hook though.

It’s compounded with a penalty and the Warriors get down for a shot at Manly’s line and they initially score, but the Bunker goes on to deny the try for an obstruction.

It took a while for them to make the decision, and after last night’s no call it’s a lottery on what they’ll come up with.

10th minute - Sea Eagles 4-0

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is hit with a high shot from Josh Aloiai and has blood coming from his bugle.

Manly is having major issues getting out of their own head.

Three times in a row the Warriors have kept them camped deep in their own end and they’ve had to kick from inside their own 30m.

A penalty and two set restarts haven’t helped their cause, nor has the fact their forwards haven’t been willing to get in and have a carry of the ball.

Like he’s done so many times in his career, Daly Cherry-Evans stands up under pressure and kicks a 40-20.

Manly takes full advantage with their first attacking set of the game, with Tom Trbojevic setting up Jason Saab to score in the corner.

6PM: Friday Night Footy is underway at Brookie.

Will the Sea Eagles take another step towards the top four or can the Warriors spring an upset?

5.30PM: It’s the dilemma that is set to leave Manly coach Anthony Seibold with a good headache.

The return of Tolutau Koula (CTW/FLB $406,300) creates big questions on how the back five for the Sea Eagles will line up coming into the finals.

He lines up on the interchange bench for tonight’s clash with the Warriors.

Lehi Hopoate (FLB $539,900) has been a revelation since making his debut and has shifted to the wing with the irreplaceable Tom Trbojevic (FLB $920,600) coming back from injury.

Then you have Jason Saab, Reuben Garrick and Tommy Talau who have all been performing consistently, and Garrick’s goalkicking has come in very handy.

Will Seibold go forward with an outside back on the bench, or will one of the six make way in the weeks to come?

5PM: It’s news that has come too late for the Warriors, but they welcome back a very promising half.

Luke Metcalf (5/8 $505,100) has been named to play his first game since round four and will line up at five-eighth, seeing Chanel Harris-Tavita (HFB $466,300) drop to the interchange.

In a big blow for the Warriors, Wayde Egan is out of the side with Freddy Lussick (HOK $204,500) replacing him at hooker.

Karl Lawton is out for the Sea Eagles, replaced in the starting 13 by Ben Trbojevic (CTW/2RF $417,000) in a big coup for those who have stuck solid with him from the outset.

Flyer Tolutau Koula (CTW/FLB $406,300) comes onto the interchange bench.

Sea Eagles vs Warriors - top recent SuperCoach scores
Sea Eagles vs Warriors - top recent SuperCoach scores

EARLIER: The Manly Sea Eagles are fighting to break into the top four when they take on the Warriors, while SuperCoaches will be hoping the Roosters can heap more misery upon the Parramatta Eels.

Superstar fullbacks Tom Trbojevic (64.3%) and James Tedesco (68.2%) are among the most owned fullbacks in for the top 10% of SuperCoach teams heading into the round, with Reuben Garrick, Haumole Olakau’atu, Angus Crichton, Dominic Young also very popular players and among the most purchased players heading into the round, as are Joseph Manu and Sam Walker.

But really all eyes will be on Teddy and Turbo, who both have incredibly high ceilings, great match-ups this week and a solid draw for the rest of the season. Many SuperCoaches will be running with both of these guys for the run home and with 5RA’s of 100.8 for Trbojevic and 95.2 for Tedesco, it isn’t hard to see why.

Dominic Young has been named to make his return from a hamstring injury that saw him ruled out during the Roosters Round 22 match against Manly, while his side had the bye in Round 23. But given his injury there is a chance he could be a late withdrawal, but thankfully his side plays early in the round so you can plan accordingly.
