SuperCoach NRL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 24

Round 24 teams are in for the NRL, with some big names set to return from injury.

Storm forward Eli Katoa is back in the starting lineup after sitting out last round, Dylan Edwards is among the reserves and a chance of returning to fullback and Roosters winger Dominic Young is also named to start after suffering a hamstring injury last time out.

WINNERS FROM TEAMS

* Dominic Young - Named for the Roosters despite failing to finish his last match due to a hamstring injury. Rested up over the bye and has an incredible run home against the Eels, Titans, Raiders and Rabbitohs.

* Eli Katoa - The man with the third most points of any 2RF this year has been named to return from a knee injury for the Storm.

* Dylan Edwards - Named on the extended bench for the Panthers as he aims to return from a knee injury sustained in Origin. Don’t go there this week against the Storm, but a definite POD for the run home in good match-ups against the Raiders, Rabbitohs and Titans.

* Sam Stonestreet/Ronaldo Mulitalo - One of these guys will be a winner. Stonestreet has been a popular cheapie/POD over the last few weeks and has been named again this week. But his time in first grade appears limited with Mulitalo named on the extended bench as he aims to return from injury. Late Mail will be crucial here but 12 per cent of teams still own Mulitalo.

LOSERS FROM TEAMS

* Reece Walsh - The Broncos are on the bye and Walsh suffered a broken hand on the weekend which could end his season. Sell to any of the fullback options mentioned below.

BUY

* Kalyn Ponga/James Tedesco/Tom Trbojevic: Three superstar fullbacks and just two slots to fit them into means we’re all going to be deathriding someone this week. I don’t think there’s a wrong answer here as all three have strong reasons to be selected.

All have good draws, all have sky high ceilings, all are playing on teams which need to keep wining in order to optimise their finals chances. Personally I have Teddy and Turbo and I’m happy with that. If I had HEAPS of trades and H2H to win then I might shuffle between them based on draw and if you are doing that then I think Tedesco (Eels) and Trbojevic (Warriors) have match-ups I prefer to Ponga (Sharks).

* Angus Crichton: With five scores of 95+ already this season there are few second-rowers with the upside that Crichton possesses. Available for a tick under $700K the price is right and I think I’ll be burning my final trade to bring the mighty Angus in to my team - silly move this far out I know!

* Zac Lomax: The Dragons have a decent draw (Titans/Sharks/Eels/Raiders) to close and plenty to play for. Lomax is a good buy for anyone looking to end the Marzhew/Mulitalo experiments.

* Joey Manu: The prince of centres for under $575K with the Eels/Titans/Raiders and Rabbitohs on his horizon. Yes please!

* Sam Walker: With five scores of 100+ already this season (including two in his past two matches) Walker is a tremendous backup to Nathan Cleary. As discussed above the Roosters’ draw is a good one.

SELL

* Scott Drinkwater: Drinkwater may have the most points of any player so far this year, but I am on board with anyone selling him to bring in one of the trio at the top of this list. Walsh is playing well but is on a bye so must go. Papenhuyzen has had some good games of late but he’s not scoring in the same class as the best at position.

* Greg Marzhew: Lacks the consistent scoring of the elite CTW options. The Newcastle draw is a good one, but I couldn’t play Marzhew over any of the likes of To’o/Garrick/Manu/Young/Lomax/Kiraz and even Iro. Sell.

FED-UP PAYTEN AXES TOWNSEND

Cowboys coach Todd Payten has wielded the axe and dropped departing halfback Chad Townsend.

Townsend is a big-name casualty for Saturday’s clash with the Raiders following North Queensland’s shocking 42-18 loss to the Broncos last weekend.

The Cowboys looked destined to keep their top four hopes alive when they bounced out to a 18-6 lead against the battling Broncos.

But Brisbane scored 36 unanswered points in Townsville to record a much-needed victory and keep their faint finals hopes alive.

Payten threatened to axe players after the game and has followed through, with Jake Clifford to replace the Roosters-bound Townsend.

Clifford has been in hot form for the ladder-leading Northern Pride in the Hostplus Cup, racking up 17 try-assists and eight tries in 14 reserve grade appearances this year.

If Clifford fires in the No. 7 jersey it may mean Townsend has played his last NRL game for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys (12-9) are sitting seventh on the ladder and in danger of dropping out of the top eight if they don’t win at least one more game.
