Exclusive: First look at the first ever Camaro V8 Supercar chassis

In a glimpse into the future, News Corp Australia has obtained the very first pictures of the chassis design which will morph into the new Camaro V8 Supercar.

This metal skeleton is destined to become the first ever Camaro Supercar.

In an X-ray like glimpse into the future, News Corp Australia has obtained the very first pictures of the Triple Eight Race Engineering built “Gen 3” chassis.

Constructed of chrome-moly tubing and super high-strength steel, the chassis will form the skeleton of the Supercar from 2022.

While this metal superstructure is destined to become the Chevrolet Camaro prototype, the same chassis will be used for the Ford Mustang.

Supercars boss Sean Seamer said the new chassis design would allow manufacturers to put replicas — at least in terms of looks — on the grid.

The current generation Mustang has been called more VW beetle than Ford because it has been squashed onto a chassis designed for the Falcon and the Commodore.

“The chassis has entirely new dimensions that allow for greater flexibility and suitability of marques, including the very low-slung Mustang and Camaro,” said Supercars boss Sean Seamer.

“The new chassis dimensions also allow for more road car design to be included in the cars.”

Seamer also said the groundbreaking design would result in better racing and safety.

“The front and rear sections are removable, which means minor crash repairs on the front and rear of the car can be more quickly executed and overall, there’s more chance of keeping cars on track over the weekend even after significant crashes.

“It also means improved safety with the driver further away from the door and there’s a small hatch for medical crew access, similar to GT cars.

Supercars boss Sean Seamer says the new chassis has entirely new dimensions that allow for greater flexibility.

“A 25 litre increase in fuel capacity, providing greater flexibility for race distances/formats.”

Supercars championship leader and Bathurst 1000 champion Shane van Gisbergen predicted the new Gen 3 cars would look “super tough”.

“I don’t know too much about them yet, but hopefully some more information comes, but I think they are going to be pretty cool cars with the less downforce and they look proper,“ van Gisbergen said.

“The Camaro … all the renders you see of that look like it’s a super tough car. The Mustang looks like it’s supposed to and it looks awesome.

“I think the cars are going to be super tough, look good, sound good and still be quite fast.

“I think it’s definitely going to be a cool thing and something we probably need.“
