Shane van Gisbergen will be out to claim a rare piece of history at Mount Panorama this weekend with the V8 king vying to become just the second driver to claim the Bathurst Triple Crown.

Following his unbeaten start to the Supercars season, the Triple Eight star will strap down in a BMW M4 and attempt to extend his Bathurst double of a 1000km win in a Supercar and a 12 Hour GT victory to a triple by claiming the six hour.

And the new Kiwi king of the sport is doing it all injured, continuing his recovery from a broken collarbone and ribs after a mountain bike incident just over three weeks ago.

“I don’t think about those stats at the moment,” van Gisbergen said.

“Maybe I’ll look back on it in 20 years. It’s fun to do something different. There’s 60 cars and it’s cool watching the whole pit lane come out. You do a full lap of the track, drive past pit lane and the last cars are still coming out. It’s a huge field.

“The guys I am driving with, Shane (Smollen) and Rob (Rubis) are great guys and doing it for the right reasons – just to have some fun and I love that – it’s how I always try to drive.”

While van Gisbergen is enjoying his time away from the spotlight of the Supercars circus, he says that there is still a big desire to win.

The Bathurst treble has only been claimed by one other driver, Queenslander Paul Morris.

“Outside the car, there isn’t as much intensity but even after the first practice session, you get out of the car and there was a lot to work on, getting the car mechanically ready and improving the comfort for the driver,” van Gisbergen said.

“Like Supercars, the principles are just the same – you’re still trying to lap as quick as you can. There’s always so many things and objectives you’re trying to achieve.”

Van Gisbergen is expecting the BMW to be easier on his injured shoulder than his Supercar.

“Once I’m in the car it’s OK. If I hit something the ribs hurt a bit and that’s probably the biggest thing,” van Gisbergen said.

“But I’m fine once I’m in there. I’ve just got to move around slowly.”

Continuing his reputation of racing anything with four wheels, van Gisbergen will also race a Mercedes Benz in the supporting GT World Challenge races at Bathurst this weekend, while the TCR Australia cars are also at The Mountain, making their track debut at the famed central western NSW venue.
