Langer Cup 2020: Meet captain Josh Pese who is a vital cog in Wavell SHS’s Langer Cup machine

He is the man behind Wavell SHS’s unbeaten start to the Langer Cup season, yet before this season Josh Pese had no formal captaincy experience. So what did Wavell’s coaching staff see in the diminutive hooker?

In many ways Joshua Pese embodies Wavell SHS’s unbeaten Langer Cup campaign entering Wednesday’s showdown with Ipswich SHS at Ipswich.

Like his team, Pese is somewhat understated who, also like many of his peers, was unheralded at the start of the season but who has risen to the occasion.

Before this season, Pese had basically not captained a game of tiggy in the schoolyard let alone a rugby league side.

“It is a real honour captaining these boys,’’ Pese said.

“They all put their heart into Wavell,’’ added the Pine Central Hornets junior and Norths Devils hooker.

Wavell SHS coach Jimmy Francis said he identified Pese as a potential leader while observing him last season in the open reserves.

“He is someone who last year really came along in his development really quickly and gained a lot of confidence being around our first squad,’’ Francis said.

“He had a real confidence around the way he went about his work and was naturally a leader.

“He played a leadership role within our multicultural group at the school and is someone who is consistent on and off the field.

“He is dedicated to his studies and is always committed to what he does.

“He was just someone meticulous with his preparation.

“They way he gets the boys together, they have a lot of respect for him as well.’’

Teammate Tahrell Feaveai, who was one of the new kids on the block this season after being promoted from the year 10 Walters Cup side, said Pese’s communication was outstanding.

“He keeps us up to date with everyone and is good on the field,’’ he said.

“He is very hard working and I love working with him, especially in the position when he is next to me.

“I love defending and attacking with him. He is a good bloke.’’
