The first day of the NSW Senior State Age Championships has wrapped, check out which Sydney clubs starred.

Records were on the line as up and coming talent went for gold on day 1 of the NSW Senior State Age Championships at SOPAC. Check out our highlights from the opening night of finals.

Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre was abuzz as young swimming talent took to the pool for the first day of the NSW Senior State Age Championships.

24 finals were run on Saturday, with host club SOPAC and rivals Warringah Aquatic SC shining with top talent.

Here are the highlights from Day 1.

Lachlan Davies - Miles above the rest

14 year old Lachlan Davies, representing Warringah Aquatic SC, finished 3 seconds ahead of the field as he took home 1st in the 13-14 boys 200m backstroke final.

Lachlan is also the reigning titleholder in this event, and it clearly showed, touching the wall with a full body’s length to second place.

He was also awarded “Swimmer of the Night”, which goes to the athlete closest to breaking the National Age record.

Matthew King - Hard-fought victory

The hometown favourite came out on top for the 15 years boys 100m breaststroke final, with Matthew King from SOPAC taking the gold by just under half a second.

Rafaela Kopellou - The narrowest of margins

Another hometown talent, with SOPAC’s Rafaela Kopellou snatching first place in the 15 year girls 200m individual medley by just 0.01 of a second to second place Ava Rolleson.

The girls were trading leads throughout the legs, but Kopellou pulled through by the narrowest of margins to claim the title.

Samuel Higgs - Composed victory

Warringah Aquatic star Sam Higgs claimed his second successive 200m individual medley state championship in a composed 16 year boys final.

Higgs fell behind following the second leg but made it back up in the butterfly, before storming ahead in the final freestyle leg touch the wall almost a full second ahead of his rival.

Matthew Galea and Wesley Roberts - SOPAC 1-2 finish

The host club’s 2 swimmers shone in the Men’s 18 and over 400m freestyle final, bringing home a 1-2 finish.

Galea powered home with a time of 3:53:61 to take top spot, while his teammate Roberts finished in 3:57:62, just narrowly ahead of Carlile’s Kai Edwards.

Oscar Kreutzberger - Long distance composure

Kreutzberger from Albury North looked untouchable in the boys 13-14 1500m freestyle final, powering home to finish well ahead of his rivals.

In a gruelling long-distance final, Kreutzberger never looked in any doubt of the win, while titleholder Luke Higgs finished in 3rd.
