Dubbo Rams produced two of the four champions after an intriguing day two of the Western Junior League basketball finals.
The Rams showed their dominance in girls competition, winning both the U16s (comfortably) and the U18s (much closer).
The U16s, who were untouchable all season, proved too strong for Orange Eagles 64-38. A few hours later, the U18 girls beat Bathurst Goldminers 65-55.
Gilgandra Windmills, who finished seventh last year, completed a remarkable turnaround to win the U16 boys crown, 80-55 over Leeton Eagles Green. Meanwhile, Lithgow Lazers took the U18 boys title with a four-point win over West Wyalong Wildcats.
SUNDAY’S REPLAYS
U18 Boys: Lithgow Lazers 71 d West Wyalong Wildcats 67
It was sweet redemption for the Lithgow Lazers in their U18 grand final against West Wyalong.
Not only were the Lazers beaten in the grand final last year, they also suffered their only loss of the season to West Wyalong in their semi-final on Saturday.
“I was proud of the boys and what we did,” said Lithgow’s Eli Morris.
“To get that win today was tremendous.
“We were a little nervous but we knew we could do it.”
U18 girls: Dubbo Rams 65 d Bathurst Goldminers 55
Ainsley Holmes helped the Dubbo Rams to their grand final win over the Bathurst Goldminers in the U18 competition with a top scoring game in her team’s 10-point victory.
Holmes, who chipped in 21 points to be the game’s top scorer, said the Rams were delighted with the somewhat surprising win.
“This is a new team. I played in Orange last year,’’ said the 17-year-old.
“We finished third in the rounds and now we have won so we’re pretty happy. We just worked well as a team.
“We went in as underdogs but we all wanted to win because it was our last year together.”
U16 boys: Gilgandra Windmills 80 d Leeton Eagles Green 55
What a difference a year has made for the Gilgandra Windmills.
Seventh last year, the club took out the U16 crown with their 25-point victory over the Leeton Eagles in Bathurst on Sunday.
“We had more experience, got a year older and got taller,’’ said Gilgandra player Sebastian Manusu, who said his team is tight-knit and made up of close friends.
“We come from a small town and we all work together.’’
Gilgandra came into the game as favourites, winning their first 10 matches of the season before encountering their first loss.
Luke O’Neill top scored for the Windmills with a mighty 29 point haul in the grand final.
U16 girls: Dubbo Rams 64 Orange Eagles 38
Playing together for years, being good mates and putting the effort in is the secret to success for one NSW basketball team who just finished their season undefeated.
The Dubbo Rams Under 16 girls side were untouchable in the Western League all season before winning their grand final against the Orange Eagles on Sunday.
Rams player Tayla Mongam and her teammates have been playing together for years and said “teamwork and effort” helped deliver them the title.
“We all go to school together as well some of us and in Year 8 and some Year 9,” said the 14-year-old who is young enough to play in the under 16 competition again next season.
Mongam said she is passionate about basketball and would love one day to be suiting for her favourite WNBL team, the Sydney Flames.
