It was a State of Origin battle with all the feeling you would expect - and thrills.

The NSW Blues and Queensland Maroons’ tussle for the gold medal in the 17’s event at the Water Polo Australian national state championships lived up to its pre-game hype.

The two best teams in the four-day competition gave it their all in a match which was level at 4–4 at half time and showcased the best youth female talent in the sport.

But the Queensland Maroons moved up a gear in the second half to take the match and the title 10–8.

“It was very intense and both teams played very well,’’ Queensland coach Fabio Pavanello said. “We were down 2-1 early and fought back which was pleasing.

“I think both teams’ goalies kept them in the game in the first half.

“In the second half we challenged our team to grind the game out and ultimately our depth and goal keepers helped us put the pressure on NSW. (Our players) also had a lot of faith in each other.’’

Ireland said the Queensland players are extremely tight knit and this is one of their strengths.

“They are really resilient and very talented girls and they have a dynamic style of play,“ she said. “They play together all the time and have done for some time.

“Neither of us have lost a game so this should be a great match.

Coach Fabio Pavanello said his in-form team was “well rounded”.

“I think we have been building through each game strongly,” he said ahead of their grand final appearance on Tuesday.
