After a thrilling opening day of action at the Australian youth water polo championships in Perth, there have been some big winners in the U14 and U18 competitions.

Mermaids Pink and the Hunter Hurricanes lead the U14 girls gold division while SNB Breakers, Sydney Uni and UWA Bears are already dominating the U14 boys gold championship.

In the U18 boys gold competition UWA, the Melbourne Collegians, Melville Sharks and Sydney University Lions started their event with two big wins each.

In the U18 girls gold competition, Mermaids Pink, the Sydney University Lionesses and MATS Polo produced two crucial wins on the opening day of their tournament.

The U14 boys green competition is being lead by the Dolphins with AHS White leading the U14 girls event and Mermaids Blue and Vikings the U18 girls green comp.

A thrilling Sydney derby in the U14 boys clash between Balmain and Cronulla certainly lived up to its billing, with the Tigers eventually emerging triumphant.

Oliver Varone smashed in three for the Tigers with Jack Currenti and Declan Moore each scoring two. Charlie Wirth scored twice for Cronulla.
