The best talent in the U15 and U17 boys ranks in Australia is competing at the national state championships in Melbourne from Thursday until Sunday.

Also in attendance will be Australians selectors keeping an eye on the future of the sport.

National squads will be named at the end of the event looking ahead to the LA and Brisbane Olympics.

We take a look at some of the players expected to be making waves in Melbourne.

15 AND UNDER PLAYER TO WATCH

Tian Markart - UQ Barracudas - Queensland Maroon 15&U Boys

Tian is a promising goalie who has grown in leaps and bounds over the past few years. He will be looking to impress at the national state championships.

Sean Bright - UQ Barracudas - Queensland Maroon 15&U Boys

A rising star of the sport and one of the best centre forwards in the game in his age. The young gun from Brisbane will be hoping to impress selectors at the event with his skills.

Kairo Lynch - River City - Queensland Maroon 15&U Boys

A talented centre back and will play a key role in the Queensland Maroon 15&U Boys’ defensive efforts at the event.

Benjamin Spall - Carina Warriors - Queensland Maroon 15&U Boys

A driver and another up-and-comer in the sport. This will be his first taste of state representation and he will be looking to impress.

Harry Colley - Polo Bears - Queensland Maroon 15&U Boys

An outside shooter with talent to burn. With the national champions title up for grabs, Harry is hoping his goalscoring ability will help his team to victory.

Mitch Bohan - Victoria Navy 15&U Boys - DVE Aquatics

Played for Victoria at the Delfina Tournament and won a silver medal. Is now competing at his first national state championships and will captain his side. A great leader and hard worker.

Joshua Gould - Ovens and Murray - 15&U NSW Blues

A strong left hander and a players with smarts. He’ll be key to the success of the 15&U NSW Blues at the National State championships.

Cillian McGrath - SNB Breakers - 15&U NSW Blues

Cillian is a centre back for the 15&U NSW Blues, and is a talented player keen to show his wares at the event.

Campbell Warren - Sydney Uni Lions - 15&U NSW Blues

The captain of the 15&U NSW Blues for the 2022 National State championships event in Melbourne. A right driver/utility and has a great tactical mind.

Zachary Paul - SNB Breakers - 15&U NSW Blues

Zachary is a tall, strong centre forward who can also play centre back. His versatility will come in handy for the 15&U NSW Blues.

Declan McGregor - UNSW Wests - 15&U NSW Waratahs

The son of former Australian player Sam McGregor. He plays centre back and is both broad and tall. Hails from the NSW country town of Dubbo.

Benjamin Burshtein - UNSW Wests - 15&U NSW Blues

A player on the rise and one of the top performers in his age group over the past 12 months. He’ll be looking to continue his good form into the event.

Lincoln Nicholson - Gungahlin Dragons - 15&U ACT

A centre back and driver for the 15&U ACT team. A hard worker and good leader who is known to be cool under pressure.

Ayrton Rogis - Nordek - 15&U ACT

A strong left handed centre forward who has a great shot. He’ll be key and hoping to strike the back of the net on many occasions at the National State championships.

Samuel Ciccocioppo - Adelaide Vikings - 15&U South Australia

Samuel is a strong centre forward with a good and accurate shot. He is a very fast and agile player.

Oliver Maddern - SPOC Water Polo - 15&U South Australia

Oliver plays utility for the 15&U South Australian team, he is a good swimmer with strong legs and reads the play well.

Charlie Smart - Adelaide Vikings - 15&U South Australia

Charlie also plays utility for the 15&U South Australian team. He is a young player with good potential, very versatile, and a strong swimmer.

17 AND UNDER PLAYERS TO WATCH AT NATIONAL STATE TITLES

Harper Stewart - UNSW Wests Magpies - NSW Blues 17&U Boys

A left-handed from Maroubra. Harper was in the Australian youth men’s squad earlier this year and enters the tournament in fine form after making his debut in senior first grade in 2022.

Lucas Young - Sydney Uni Lions - NSW Blues 17&U Boys

A driver with plenty of talent who also made the Australian youth mens squad earlier this year. He has also tasted plenty of success over the years with Australian youth championships titles with his Sydney Uni team across all age groups - 14&U, 16&U and 18&U.

Sam Bloomfield - Newcastle Water Polo (Easts Water Polo Club) - 17&U NSW Blues

Sam will be one to watch at the 2022 National State Championships. He has been in the mix for underage Australian squads in recent years, and will be looking to impress in the pool in Melbourne.

Ashton Brown - Sydney Uni Lions - 17&U NSW Waratahs

A strong centre forward who was also in the Australian Cadet men’s squad which played at the FINA Cadet World Championships earlier this year.

Zac Izzard - Sydney Uni Lions - 17&U NSW Waratahs

Zac was selected in the Australian Cadet men’s team at the FINA Cadet World Championships. Now up into the Youth age group, he will be looking to impress at the championships.

Lewis Saupin - Sydney Uni Lion - 17&U NSW Waratahs

Also a member of the Australian Cadet Men’s team which finished fifth in the gold division at the FINA Cadet World titles this year. He’ll team up with his Sydney Uni Lions team mates Ashton Brown and Zac Izzard to form a formidable trio for the 17&U NSW Waratahs.

Oliver Purcell - Victoria Silver 17&U Boys - Melbourne Collegians

The vice-captain of the Australian youth men’s squad this year for the FINA World championships. At Summer Slam he received the Goalie of the Tournament award. Has represented Victoria on numerous state teams and currently plays with Victorian Phoenix in the National League

Nicholas Mordes - Victoria Silver 17&U Boys - Melbourne Collegians

Nicholas was vice-captain of the Australian squad cadet men’s team at this year’s FINA World Championships. He was the only Victorian selected for the WPA Paris and Beyond Squads and was also selected to be part of the WPA Youth Advisory Committee.

Rhys Coolican - Sunshine Coast - Queensland Maroon 17&U Boys

Rhys hails from the Sunshine Coast and is a dynamic and creative player, He will be interesting to watch and critical to the success of Queensland Maroon 17&U Boys.

Owen Lilleyman (UWA), Timothy Lonnqvist (UWA), Harry Tucker (UWA) - 17&U WA Gold

The talented trio of Lilleyman, Lonnqvist and Tucker will be integral to 17&U WA Gold’s tilt at the national championships title. All have been part of Australian Cadet squads in recent years and will be looking for a strong performance at the championships.

Ben Symington - Nordek - 17&U ACT/TAS

Has been in the mix for underage Australian squads for the past few years. After a solid off season of training, he’ll be looking to impress at this years’ National State Championships.

Ben Taylor - Adelaide Vikings - 17&U South Australia

A member of the Australian Youth squad for the past 12 months. The young gun will be looking for a big performance at the event.

Jack French - UQ Barracudas - Queensland Maroon 17&U Boys

Jack was a member of the extended Australian youth mens squad selected after the 2022 Summer Slam earlier this year. He is a creative and versatile player and a key to Queensland Maroons success.

Joshua Eyles - Sunshine Coast - Queensland Maroon 17&U Boys

A member of the Queensland Thunder Australian water polo league squad for a number of years. He is one of the leading players at the event and will be looking to impress.

Matthew Bonser - UQ Barracudas - Queensland Maroon 17&U

Matthew is a strong centre forward and a player with talent to burn. He is part of Queensland Thunder’s Australian water polo league squad and will be integral to Queensland Maroon in Melbourne.

Harrison Cole - UQ Barracudas - Queensland 17&U Boys

Harrison is a star goalkeeper. He was part of the Australian Cadet men’s team that finished fifth in the gold division at the recent 2022 FINA Cadet world titles in Greece.

Jake Martin - Adelaide Vikings - 17&U South Australia

A member of the Australian Men’s Cadet team that finished fifth in the gold division at the 2022 FINA Cadet World championships in Greece.

Michael Ward - Adelaide Vikings - 17&U South Australia

He is an upcoming goalkeeper and he will hold the fort for his team in the cage at the championships..

Archer Lane - Sandy Bay - 17&U ACT/TAS

A utility player and a strong swimmer from Tasmania. He’ll join the composite ACT and Tasmania team for the 2022 National State championships.
