Live stream: Olympian Glynis Nunn holds Australian Little Athletics Championships in high esteem (SA Track & FIeld Championships)

A pioneer on the world stage, Olympic medallist Glynis Nunn is now devoting her time to the nation’s future and believes the Australian Little Athletics Championships are key to unlocking another golden generation.

She is one of Queensland’s favourite daughters, but athletics trailblazer Glynis Nunn OAM has promised she won’t be putting her home state above any others when she sits trackside for the Australian Little Athletics Championships this weekend.

Nunn, who was the first female to win a heptathlon gold at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, will join the KommunityTV coverage of the Australian championships as a colour commentator on Saturday.

KommunityTV will be the exclusive home of the Australian Little Athletics Championships with all the track and select field events live streamed on News Corp Australia mastheads on April 22-23.

Nunn has been a dedicated volunteer with Little Athletics Australia for a number of years, running national coaching camps as well as doing elite coaching out of Ashmore Little Athletics on the Gold Coast.

She has also led several key delegations to Athletics Australia for the Little Athletics organisation.

While she was not a Little As kid, with no club in her hometown Toowoomba when she was growing up, Nunn is adamant the key role the program plays in the lives of young athletes cannot be understated.

Nunn said the Australian Little Athletics Championships, which gives athletes an opportunity to compete as a team against the best young athletes in the country was a key to that success.

“It is good because it gives the kids recognition and the passion to continue with their sport,” she said.

“A lot of the time when we get kids at 12, 13, 14, they find other things that are important. To keep them involved, and to keep them driving to try and achieve in this sport is really good.

“In Australia we are privileged, we have got that many sports that we can choose from, we are spoiled. To have kids choose track and field is really special and we have to keep them involved.

“I support any kid, I support everyone right down to the officials and the organisers and everyone else. (I am) just there for the sport, full stop.”

Nunn was a two-time Commonwealth Games medallist, winning gold in the heptathlon in Brisbane 1982 and bronze in hurdles in Edinburgh 1986.

The trained teacher came through the sport well before it became the professional environment it was today, and was forced to scrap and fight to make ends meet while gearing up for her gold medal performance in Los Angeles.

Nunn said the sporting environment at the elite level had changed over the years, but her passion to drive the young athletes to keep pushing for that had not.

“I have got young kids who are passionate about their sport, if I am not involved then they have to find someone else,” Nunn said.

“I know I am not indispensable, but if I am not involved then those people I am involved with will have to find someone else and there is not a lot of coaches around.

“That is why I am still here, I could have quite easily walked away from the sport a few years ago but I didn’t. I am glad I didn’t. I wouldn’t have the athletes I have at the moment, who are achieving at a high level.

“It is about walking the talk. It is all about getting people involved in Little As centres teaching the right technique, going through the right progression. Doing all those things.”

The Australian Little Athletics Championships begin with the opening ceremony on Friday afternoon before the action heats up on the track and in the field on Saturday morning.
