Little Athletics NSW will field a large and strong team at the Little Athletics Australian championships in Melbourne this weekend and they head south with a very big objective.
The LANSW team last year finished third on the teams pointscore competition and have their sights set on going two places better at this year’s event.
“NSW teams have a strong reputation and wouldn’t mind getting that trophy back,’’ said LANSW development officer and championship team manager Youcef Abdi. “That’s the goal.’’
Victoria wrapped up the teams championship in 2022 last year.
You can catch all the action on KommunityTV from Friday. The live stream coverage includes two days of action from 9am on Saturday as well as the opening (Friday from 3.25pm) and closing ceremonies (Sunday from 4.30pm) and the Hall of Fame ceremony (Friday from 6.50pm).
“They wanted to expand the championship, so for the first time they have added in an under 14s Australian junior championships as well,’’ Abdi said.
“But the team championship is based on the under 13s and you can select up to 16 athletes to cover 14 events. You can also have two athletes per event.
“The big goal is that we are hoping for them to all have a good time.
“That’s what’s this is all about we want them to have fun and enjoy the experience, and just do their best.
Abdi said it is difficult to judge which state will be strongest at the championship this weekend.
“We don’t really know what athletes from other states have been doing but I know we do have some good distance runners in boys and girls.”
Abdi identified a number of young guns he expects to turn heads at the meet as NSW chases the team trophy.
“A few names I think will make an impact include our race walker Sophie Polkinghorne,’’ he said.
“She will do very well. I am predicting she will win.
“Another is Sienna Novak in the 800m in the U13s. She won her race (at the Australian juniors) in a PB with a time of 2m 15.34.
“Annisha Reader in the discus is another. She threw 36.26 (at the nationals) and Amalia Bond is also good.
“In the high jump there is Olivia Scott-Rogers who jumped a 1.65m (triple jump) which was good and Adelaide Pittis.’’
In the boy’s competitions. Abdi is expecting good things from a number of his team members after strong performances at the Australian titles.
“Harry Keats, he finished second in the 800m, but it was a very close race,’’ Abdi said.
“In the 90m hurdle Davin Yap won his event in 13.143.
“A thrower and boys captain, Ashton Taeiloa, threw 45.68 in discus.’’
