Garville captain Phoebe Bonner has come alive to lift her side into the Netball SA Premier League top four at the halfway point of the season.

The wing attack was blistering through the midcourt as Garville punished a wayward Metro Jets in a dominant 63-44 win.

With Annaliese Janssen exploiting her height advantage in the aerial battle, scoring an impressive haul of 53 goals from 62 attempts, the Garville side cast aside their poor final quarter form with a blistering 17-goal final quarter.

It was the same old story for the Jets side, who have struggled for consistency over the four quarters.

The Jets fought back bravely in the third quarter, outscoring their rivals 14-9 after the main break, and pulling the margin back to single digits.

Goal keeper Chloe Britten was at the heart of the Jets fight back, with her impressive netball IQ coming to the fore as she constantly shut down Garville raids.

But the fight back didn’t continue after the final break, with Garville exploiting the Jets disconnect through the midcourt to beat their rivals on the transition.

With Bonner steering the ship in the midcourt and Jansen out-muscling the Jets defenders, Garville quickly pushed the lead out to a match-winning 20 goals.

Garville pulled out all the stops down the stretch to score a brilliant come-from-behind win over Metro Jets in the Netball SA Premier League Reserves clash.

In a match that was there for both sides to take, it was Garville shooter Chelsea Swann who stepped up when it mattered most to drive her side to a 60-56 win.

Swann exploited the back court well and proved a strong target for her midcourters including Lily-Mae Balkwell, who had a blinder of a game.

After playing some late minutes for the Premier League side, Mackenzie Rathjen made the most of a full game up front for the Metro Jets, shooting 37 goals from 45 attempts.

With only their second win of the season, the Garville side climbed into fifth place from eighth, and now sit only a win away from the Jets in fourth.

PREVIEW

The Netball SA Hospital Research Foundation Group Premier League will host its second consecutive ‘Ribbon Round’ this Friday as PL and Reserves clubs hit the court for a cause.

The round, which is designed to raise money and awareness for cancer and cancer research, has been spearheaded by Metro Jets, who will clash with Garville this week.

You can watch all the action from the Premier League and Reserves double header LIVE and EXCLUSIVE right here on The Advertiser website and KommunityTV.

Jets stalwart Alice Gerlach, who lost a close friend to cancer in June of 2022, said the results on court would be secondary to those off it this week.

“Back in 2022 a good friend of mine, Chloe, had her husband, Dave, diagnosed with brain cancer and not long after he sadly passed away.

“On the Friday following we were able to come together as a club just to hold a round to say a big thanks to Dave and shared a minute of silence and from there we’ve tried to make it a bit broader and spread awareness.

“It’s been progressing and having the Hospital Research Foundation Group on-board for fundraising has been really big as well.

“Obviously each team is going to go out there to win on Friday but a really big win would be seeing those donations come through and then being able to put them towards research and treatment.”

Players across every Premier League club will be encouraged to purchase a ribbon in the foyer on Friday night to wear during their games, while attendees will be able to make donations to the cause on the night, as will the general public in the lead up.

All proceeds will go towards the Hospital Research Foundation Group’s cancer research.

Gerlach hoped this season’s Ribbon Round would be the most successful yet.

“We have probably all been impacted by cancer as an individual or through family and friends but unfortunately we don’t yet have a cure for all cancers,” she said.

“If we can put a dent in the costs families need to get through cancer and treatment it would be huge.

“We also think it’s really important to create awareness and spread the word about how hard it actually can be and that it’s okay to talk to others about what you’re going through.

“We need to make sure people feel ok to talk about the challenges that come along with it all and have the help they need.”

The Jets are currently placed second bottom on the Premier League ladder and are coming off of a tough loss to Matrics, while Garville defeated Tango last week to move up to fourth.

All the action from the PL and Reserves double header will begin live right here at 7pm on Friday.
