Asha Thurlow has sent a stark reminder that she remains one of the top shooters in the Netball SA Premier League.

The Oakdale leader was clinical as she exploited constant one-on-one matchups against an inexperienced Newton Jaguars defensive circle.

Thurlow scored a brilliant 52 goals, shooting at better than 90 per cent accuracy, as the Oakdale pulled clear of the winless Jaguars to register a comfortable 69-45 win.

On a night where the club honoured their long list of local sponsors, Oakdale put on a show in the second half, extending their 12-goal halftime lead to 24 by full time.

While Thurlow was crucial to Oakdale’s efforts on the attacking end, their work in defence through the likes of Poppy Scholz and goal keeper Alexandra Ward was as impressive as the sharpshooter up front.

Oakdale constantly shut down the Jaguars out of the centre pass as the Newton side pushed their luck more and more the longer the game went on.

The win puts Oakdale within touching distance of the Premier League top four, closing the gap to rivals Garville to only one win, while the competition’s top three sides put themselves another game clear with dominant wins.

South Adelaide made light work of a young Metro Jets side with a 95-31 win while Matrics dispatched of Tango by 32 goals.

PREVIEW

They have been close, very close on a couple of occasions, but the fact remains, Newton Jaguars remain the only team yet to win a Netball SA Premier League game in 2024.

At the fifth time of asking they face Oakdale on Friday night, who themselves have been falling just short against some pretty impressive opposition.

Jaguars suffered a heartbreaking one-point defeat to Metro Jets in their season-opener before losing by two goals to Tango last week. Those results bookend two heavy losses to top four sides Matrics and Garville.

Coach Lee-Anne Cummins said her team would be ready for the Oakdale challenge this week.

“We’ve had a couple close losses so far, so we’ve been able to take some positives from our games,” Cummins said.

“Our goals aren’t necessarily just wins and losses and we’ve been able to learn so far.

“We were very happy with our first three quarters against Tango. We managed to execute what we had been working on, but we just cracked a bit under the pressure in that final term.

“We need to work on producing for four quarters and executing under pressure, which I think we can do this Friday.”

Cummins said she was wary of the Oakdale threats, especially as they ‘had a fair bit of height’.

Oakdale won their opener 67-48 victory over Tango but have since lost three in a row to three of the top four teams by an average of just seven goals.

“They’re obviously quite a tough side,” she said.

Newton Jaguars captain Brooke McDonnell will be hoping for a win on Friday.

“We’ve been able to create a lot of turnover through our games so far. We need to do that again on Friday and make sure we capitalise.

“We also want to be more cohesive up front and in defence and improve on building those connections.”

Cummins admitted the beginning of the season had been challenging results-wise, but she believed the team would continue to improve each week.

She added the club had a lot of potential to become highly competitive.

“Certainly over pre-season and now, I’ve seen glimpses of what we’re working towards, but it’s about building consistency,” she said.

“We’re a very young sidem so it’s about continuing to improve and gain experience each week.

“If we can keep building into the future I think we can be competitive against any side.”
