2025 Tasmanian Netball League live stream: Kingston v Northern Hawks, preliminary final

Northern Hawks have proven form is temporary and class is permanent, clawing their way into the Tasmanian Netball League grand final. Watch the REPLAYS of the prelim finals.

Cometh the hour, cometh the champions.

Four-time defending Tasmanian Netball League champions might not have shown the same level of clinical domination during the regular season.

But when they needed to step up a level of class in the preliminary final, the Hawks had plenty to draw upon.

With Lydia Coote pulling the strings from the centre circle, the Hawks lifted in the final quarter to overturn a two-goal deficit and send Kingston packing.

The 48-43 win, which was anchored by a 37-goal performance from shooter Courtney Treloar, will see the Hawks into next week’s grand final against the F45 Cavaliers.

Two three-goal runs in the final quarter for the Hawks ultimately proved the difference in the do-or-die final.

Down on the scoreboard, with time ticking away, Kingston moved the pieces around the chess board in an attempt to spark their offence, but the Hawks held on grimly to open the door of a fifth-straight title.

Devon v Cripps Waratah (19 and Under)

Cripps Waratah’s young guns have continued their hot streak through the Tasmanian Netball League 19-and-Under finals series.

The northern Tassie behemoths, who only narrowly escaped a one-point elimination final thriller last week, withstood a late fight back to topple Devon in the preliminary final.

Cripps’ 49-42 win on Saturday has seen them through to a grand final showdown against the impressive Northern Hawks next weekend.

Cripps lead from the outset against Devon, but it was a six-unanswered goal run into the halftime break which proved a telling factor.

They nailed four-straight on the other side of the break to stretch the lead to 12 goals before Devon finally got itself back on the board.

Cripps maintained that advantage through the third term, before a fourth-quarter fight back brought Devon back to within single digits, but realistically never within winning range.

Ruby Clark led the scoring for Cripps 36 goals from 42 attempts, while co-captain Alice Boweing added 13 goals from 16 shots.

Ava Palmer led the scoring for Devon shooting 18-of-21, while Lily Padman added 16 goals to the total.

Cripps will take plenty of confidence into next weekend’s decider, being the only team to get a win over the brilliant Hawks this season.

Cripps defeated Hawks by five goals the last time the two sides met in Round 17, although Hawks still own the overall ledger between the two sides at 2-1 this season.

PREVIEW

Kingston stalwart Emma Johns is determined to “make history” and help finally end the Blues’ TNL grand final drought in Saturday’s crunch preliminary final.

The Blues have never won an opens premiership, and their sole grand final appearance was in 2005. Goalkeeper Johns, who debuted as a 15-year-old over a decade ago and played her 150th match in round one, is desperate for the wait to be over.

Kingston finished second at the end of the regular season, but fell 62-49 to minor premiers the Cavaliers in last week’s qualifying final.

The preliminary finals will be live streamed by Kommunity TV on The Mercury’s website with the 19s at 12pm and the Open grade at 4.30pm.

They get another crack at booking a spot in next week’s decider against defending champions the Hawks at South East Stadium this weekend.

Our goal from the start of the season was to make history at the Blues and that would be to make a grand final, not just to win one,” Johns said.

“If we could do both, that’s something we’d love to do. Our 19s have won premierships over the years, but we’ve never been able to string that across into our opens space.

“I think we’ve got the squad to do so, we’ve got a lot of experienced players in our team and have a good range of age and experience this season.

“We’re an amazingly close knit group and I think it’s this season we can do it, because we all back ourselves. That’s what makes us so close.

“Right from the word go, it was our number one thing. We wanted to make history, and we believed we have the skills, the experience and the group to do so.

“As it nears closer, that fire in our belly is getting more and more.

“But we’re only thinking about this weekend and if we get the job done, we’ll look at how we prepare for the big dance and how that looks like not only for the club, but everyone who has supported us the last few years.”

Johns said they’ve looked to learn from the mistakes of last week, but turn attention quickly to Hawks, who are looking for a fourth straight flag.

The Hawks and Launceston rivals have completely dominated the TNL in recent years, with the Cavs unbeaten this season.

“Obviously couldn’t get the job done last week which was pretty disappointing, but we’re not dwelling on it,” Johns said.

“We know that we finished second for a reason, and this is where the opportunity comes to make that effort for the whole season count.

“Everyone wants to get into a grand final, and having that southern representation adds that extra element to us. We’d love to be there and put up a fight.

“One thing that stood out (last week) was a (lack of a) four quarter performance. We were up at quarter time (16-13) and we take that away as a positive, but we found our intensity dropped off.

“If we can put out a full performance we believe our best is good enough to be the best.”

Johns has had the arduous task of trying to shut down former Hawks sharpshooter Ash Mawer, but will likely clash with Courtney Treloar after the six-time league MVP’s move to Victoria.

The Hawks won the first meeting this year, before the Blues claimed the next two.

“We’ve played them three times this season and I’ve matched up on her (Treloar) every game,” Johns said.

“They do have a couple of other shooters who may not have some rotation, but I don’t see much change happening in that lineup.”
