Livestream: NSW U18 girls hockey titles: Day Two fixtures

The best young hockey players from across the state have entered the second day of the championship. Catch all the replay and recap action from day two here.

The goals were flying in the on-field action on day one of the 2021 under 18 NSW girls hockey championships, with teams competing on Saturday for a finals berth.

The teams to beat appear to be Goulburn, North West Sydney and Newcastle following impressive opening day performances.

A continuous feed of live hockey action will be broadcast online here at dailytelegraph.com.au from about 8am Saturday on day two of the titles.

REPLAY: NSW Under 18's Girls State Hockey Championships - Tamworth Vs. Newcastle 1

MATCH 10: Newcastle 4 Tamworth 1

The girls for Newcastle have made magic happen despite torrential conditions,claiming a 4-1 victory over Tamworth.

It was fast start for the game with Tamworth’s Kelly Mitchell striking gold almost immediately. The rest of the first quarter was slower as the ball transferred between both ends.

Competition tensed up in the second half, with a disposed Tamworth ball going to Newcastle’s Sienna Harvey who passed it to Indi Lawrington for their first goal.

After some fierce play, Newcastle turned the tide again with a goal by Grace Baxter, quickly followed by a daring throw by Sienna Harvey down the line.

Tamworth had several decent hits in the third quarter with especially impressive plays from Ella Mitchell. Still Newcastle pressured them in the latter part of the match with Sienna Harvey hungry for another goal.

Into the fourth quarter, Newcastle scored another up top, bringing it to 4. Desperate for some wins, Tamworth player Madie Lewin kicked it up a notch with some quick play decisions and good attacks.

Unfortunately, this one was in the bag for Newcastle, leaving Tamworth disheartened.

MATCH 9: Illawarra South Coast 1 North West Sydney 1

A top of the tables clash between North West Sydney and Illawarra South West made semi-finalists out of both teams.

In the first quarter, the ball struggled to make contact with any nets but gave North West Sydney’s Alana Kavanagh and Rosalie Flokstra the chance to show off their hockey prowess.

Illawarra South Coast failed in the second quarter to get themselves out of North West Sydney’s dominating press. Meanwhile, North West Sydney had multiple chances to go for gold but lacked verve.

The second half mentality kicked in for both teams in the third quarter with plays going end to end. However, it was a surprise shot from Alana Kavanagh which secured North West Sydney’s first goal.

Clawing Illawarra South Coast’s way onto the scoreboard, a solid match Holly Hurford and three North West Sydney Players saw her land a short corner. With skill and a beautiful trap, the Illawarra team were able to break even as the game closed out.

REPLAY: NSW Under 18's Girls State Hockey Championships - Parkes Vs. Orange

MATCH 8: Parkes 1 Orange 0

The underdogs of the competition Parkes and Orange went head to head with Parkes coming out victorious 1-nil.

No goals were made in the opening quarter despite Parkes showing a strong defence, with Abigail Simpson and Emily Searl once again commanding a majority of the play.

As the second quarter upped in pace, Orange was put under pressure, creating some impressive tries by Taylah Hobbs . But both teams proved unable to penetrate defensive pockets as the half-time bell marked nil all.

The third quarter was Parkes’ game, with Abigail Simpson scoring the match’s first goal and showcasing some impressive aerial skills. Credit due to Orange’s Katelyn Tinks who led an impressive ball up into Parke’s side.

In the last quarter, all eyes were Orange’s goalkeeper Jessica Healey to see if she could maintain her incredible run of defense which she did, even if her teammates failed to help Orange make it onto the scoreboard.

REPLAY: NSW Under 18's Girls State Hockey Championships - Goulburn vs Sydney South

MATCH 7: Sydney South 2 Goulburn (GDHA) 1

The rain has cleared and this deciding match between Goulburn and Sydney South was always bound to be a tough one.

It was all action in the first quarter of the game as strong tackle and attacks played out. However, it was a perfect transition between players to Alannah McCarthy’s stick who nailed Goulburn’s first goal.

The second quarter saw the game event ou even more with an impressive attack from Sydney South and a tomahawk throw which won them their first goal.

The talented outfit from Sydney South kept Goulburn on their feet as Chloe Holmes picked up her teammate’s missed tomahawk and rebounded the shot into the goal, securing a 2-1 by third quarter.

Standout player Chelsea Holmes hobbled off stage at the end of the quarter but returned mid final quarter.

Neither team wanted to give the other the ball as the scores narrowed in with Sydney South retaining their lead with solid defence work, Not to be overlooked was Goulburn’s mature teamwork in the last half.

MATCH 6: Tamworth Vs. North West Sydney

Heavy rain resulted in the game being a draw, granting Tamworth their first win in this tournament.

MATCH 5: Illawarra South Coast 5 Northern Sydney and Beaches 0

Illawarra South Coast has proven to be a class above their Northern Sydney and Beaches opponents, running away with a bittersweet victory.

The girls from Illawarra South Coast quickly defended their reputation scoring two goals in the first quarter, including a good turnover by left striker Holly Hurford.

In the second quarter, both teams struggled with worsening rain a possible cause for Illawarra South Coast failing to make magic happen from their numerous opportunities in the circle.

Illawarra South Coast made a strong return with a counterattack by Hurford and skilled aerial shot by Lilly Twigg resulting in a 4-nil score by the end of the third quarter. Notably, Northern Sydney and Beaches’ Jenna Coghill did put the pressure onto Illawarra South Coast with her speed.

Northern Sydney and Beaches’ striker Emily Michel also put hope back into her teammates with a clinical shot, scoring their first goal in the last round.

However, the victory was short lived with heavy rain soon breaking the game. Since the game had passed half game, the points stood meaning Illawarra South Coast came away with the win.

MATCH 4: Sydney South 4 Metro South West 3

Sydney South has held onto their undefeated run with a 4-3 win over Metro South West, keeping their semi-final hopes alive.

It was goals galore in the first quarter as Lilli Maroney for Sydney South made the first mark on the board with an aggressive press. However, Metro South West soon nudged their way in with a stick trap and goal by Captain Ella Fielding.

Sydney South scored two goals just before the end of the first quarter, with Chelsea Holmes making a strong penalty strike.

In the second quarter, fatigue got to the players with both teams missing opportunities when it came to penalty corner shots.

Spirits were high in the third quarter with a quick return from Metro South West thanks to a good push into the circle by Jemma Murray and great goal by Cassidy Ireland. Pushing the game to draw territory, Metro South West also scored another goal thanks to captain Ella Fielding with a straight shot.

However, Metro South West’s luck was narrowly pushed out with a late third quarter goal by Sydney South’s Chelsea Homes.

Sydney South played slow in the final quarter, lacking the intensity of previous quarters. However, Metro South West’s goalkeeper Holly Mills has to be applauded for her fantastic saves.

LIVE: NSW U18's State Girls Hockey Championships - Goulburn vs Parkes

MATCH 3: Goulburn 3 Parkes 1

Goulburn have proven to be too good for Parkes running away as 3-1 winners.

It was a quick start for Goulburn with Ella Smith making a calculated and confident goal up front. Her edge was soon magnified thanks to Meghan Baxter who managed to get through Parkes’ strong goalkeeping for another Goulburn goal.

In the second quarter, Parkes’ midfielder Abigail Simpson took control of the game yet again- proving herself to be a strong runner and fierce opposition in this tournament. Eloisa Purtell also had a few go’s at gold, just missing out with wide hits.

Parkes again shined in the third quarter with Abigail Simpson scoring their first goal in a strong counterattack. Not to be dismissed was Lucy Turner who had several great plays, only disrupted by a lack of forward teammates to pass to.

However, Goulburn secured their lead at the top of the standings with a third goal from striker Meg Baxter who made a tight angle shot.

REPLAY: U18's Girls NSW State Hockey Championships - Newcastle 1 Vs. Northern Sydney & Beaches 1

MATCH 2: Newcastle 3 Northern Sydney and Beaches 2

The game between two of the competition heavyweights, Northern Sydney and Beaches and Newcastle was always going to be a fierce match.

Kicking off match two with a great play by Northern Beaches Sigourney Berkery and their right striker, the team scored an impressive goal early on in the first quarter. However, a penalty corner shot went just too high before the end of the first quarter.

In the second half, both teams put the pressure under one another with some smart tackles by Amber Whitney and Sienna Harvey. Ultimately, it was a fast play by Newcastle’s Amber Whitney which saw a deflected ball land into the goal.

Hunger got to both teams in the third quarter with Newcastle’s Indi Lawrington running a straight shot against Northern Sydney and Beaches’ goalkeeper who fell to her pressure. Amber Whitney certified their position soon after with a double shot into the goal.

Northern Sydney and Beaches showed their strength with a goal at the start of the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, desperation proved to be their downfall in the latter half with some missed opportunities.

REPLAY: U18's Girls NSW State Hockey Championships - Metro South West 1 vs Orange

MATCH 1: Metro South West 2 Orange 0

Metro South West trounced Orange in the opening match of day two, putting away two goals to nil in an entertaining win.

Metro South West were keen to return to their opening tournament glory, with Taylah Jones driving the ball into a great opening goal early in the first quarter. Not to be overlooked, Orange player Alexandra Cook was definitely up to task of defence.

The star of the second half truly was Orange’s Jessica Healey as goal keeper, with multiples tries by Metro South West just not up to par with her mighty attack.

With energy high in the third quarter and both teams on the defence, it was a good bout of teamwork between Metro South West’s Taylah Jones and Cassidy Ireland which resulted in a well-paced second goal.

Orange put on the pressure against Metro South West in the final quarter with a penalty corner shoot by Alexandra Cook just missing the gold. Impressive saves from Jessica Healey also once again shone through.

With good plays on both side, Metro South West and Orange gave a well-fought start to day two fixtures.
