Summer Series: Watch the best moments of Broncos teen star Karl Oloapu at ASSRL Nationals

It was the razzle dazzle footwork that had spectators on the edge of their seats, and oppositions just on edge. Re-live the best moments of this future NRL star at the 2022 ASSRL Nationals.

Oloapu's dominance at national schoolboys championships

He calls it ‘free running’, opposition defences likely call it a nightmare.

For fans of rugby league, it’s simply mesmerising.

The sharp footwork of Australian Schoolboys prodigy Karl Oloapu was on full display as the Queenslander enjoyed a breakout performance at the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships.

The gun five-eighth is contracted to the Brisbane Broncos for the next three seasons, despite a current stalemate between player and club.

It was in the famed Maroon of his adoptive state, where Oloapu’s off-the-cuff style tore through opposition states on his way to a national title.

The New Zealand-born playmaker shone for Queensland, despite playing out of position at lock forward.

His rugged defence in the middle of the field was only bettered by his enigmatic work with ball in hand and the way he linked with fellow Australian Schoolboys teammate Keano Kini.

Oloapu’s performances made sure he stood out against a classy field of rising rugby league stars including Dolphins bound playmaker Isaiya Katoa, Queensland teammate Josiah Pahulu and Raiders bound NSW CHS fullback Chevy Stewart.

The young playmaker has a touch of Benji Marshall about the way in which he can summon success from practically nothing, as displayed in his greatest moments, but it is also a style all of his own crafted on the streets of his hometown in Redcliffe.

“The thing I do, I call a free run,” he said earlier this year.

“I just run around stepping everywhere, using my imagination.

“I do it just when I am road running around Redcliffe (his home region). I do it anywhere.

“I just imagine (jumping over) anything. The idea is just using my footwork.”
