St Gregory’s College have pulled some final points from the fire, after scoring a last minute thrilling draw against Bass High.
It was a case of opportunity missed for the Bass High side, who will count themselves unlucky after walking away with a 16-16 draw.
Having led 6-4 at half time, and dominating the majority of the second half, it looked as though Bass High were destined to claim their first win of the Peter Mulholland Cup.
Although St Greg’s had other plans, with the side adding tries in the final minute of both halves, courtesy of right wing Cody Parry and conversion from Cooper Cross.
St Greg’s coach Tom Morrison said he was proud of the unrelenting effort of his troops.
“I was very proud of our boys as they got bashed all day but kept going and fought right to the end,” he said.
Bass High five-eighth Jonathan Sua certainly led the home side, with the captain working in tandem with Bulldogs SG Ball teammate Fanafou Seve to claim the game’s first try.
Both teams certainly put everything on the line, including limbs, in what was a very physical second half. Bass High lost two players, including key playmaker Maxwell Taotua.
“It was a very very physical game. The physical battle in the middle was something to watch,” said Morrison.
Bass High’s young gun Simione Laifi was critical to the teams success, with the 15 year old adding a try to the scoreboard in the second half, along with Bulldogs Harold Matthews Star Charles Afeaki.
PREVIEW: St Gregory’s missing key weapon for final clash
St Gregory’s College has been dealt a cruel blow on the eve of the school’s final Peter Mulholland Cup clash against Bass High.
Star backrower Thomas Fletcher has been ruled out of the contest after he suffered a nasty head knock in the side’s gruelling loss to St Dominic’s College last week.
It is a tough blow for the proud schoolboys side, with both side’s determined to finish their season on a positive note after coming into the clash winless over the opening two rounds.
The crunch game between the two sides will be live streamed exclusively by KommunityTV from 1.30pm.
While St Gregory’s would have wanted to field their strongest possible outfit against a tough Bass High side, coach Tom Morrison said it was better to take the cautious approach with their representative star.
“He’s come off with a bit of memory loss, so we thought he definitely won’t be playing on Tuesday,” he said.
The fate of St Greg’s success will now lie in the hands of his NSW Combined Catholic College teammates – Tom Fletcher, Charlie Guymer and Heath Mason.
Having come within inches of a first win in their intense 22-22 draw against Hunter Sports, Bass High will be determined to grow from that effort and keep their slim hopes of earning a finals berth alive.
“We had a few decisions that went against us against Hunter, but we were so close to the win so we won’t be changing too much,” Bass High coach Jon Wilson said.
St Greg’s will have their hands full as Bass High’s line-up will include captain and five-eighth Jonathan Sua, and twins Maxwell and Mitchell Taotua, with all three coming off strong performances in Hunter clash.
