St Gregory’s College waved goodbye to their NRL Schoolboys Cup season as St Dominic’s College handed them an 18-12 defeat after an epic 60 minutes.
It was actually a double blow for St Greg’s, having lost in front of a raucous home crowd and also seeing their foes advance to the competition finals.
St Dom’s coach Kyle Churchill was full of praise for his team’s efforts.
“With a quarter-final spot on the line today, I think we really stood our ground and showed what we were about,” he said.
“I am looking forward to what is next.”
St Doms, who only had one Australian Secondary Schoolboy Championship player to St Gregs’ four, opened the scoring through a try from left wing Tykah Mohi.
But St Gregs hit back through Tom Fletcher and Tom Fisher to take an 8-4 halftime lead.
The tension was high with the referee having to intervene between the NSW Combines Catholic College teammates in the second half.
St Doms captain Liam Ison was a stand out, the fullback delivering a dynamic 60-minute performance.
.
Churchill also highlighted the outstanding efforts of both Kai Young and Mitchell Heather.
PREVIEW: State teammates become rivals for heavyweight showdown
St Dominic’s captain Liam Ison will be torn apart from teammates, as this week’s Peter Mulholland Cup draw pits him against state mates at St Gregory’s College.
Ison, along with four St Greg’s players including Tom Fletcher, Charlie Guymer, Heath Mason and Tom Fisher, represented NSW Combined Catholic Colleges at the Australian Secondary Schools Championships earlier this month.
Even though St Dominic’s only fielded one player in that side, the school is yet to lose a game and will be determined to make it a clean sweep in Thursday’s final round clash.
The game will be live streamed from St Gregory’s College by KommunityTV at 1pm.
St Dominic’s coach Kyle Churchill said his side would be steeled by the opportunity to play in the ‘colosseum-like feel’ of St Gregory’s home turf.
“It can be a bit of an intimidating task for some, but we’ve spoken about that and we’re excited to go down there and take the game away from them in front of their home crowd,” he said.
St Dominic’s squad will be a little different than usual, with Uaale Elisara and Bayden Moran out with injury. The latter played a crucial role in securing their last win against Hunter Sports High.
Back from injury, the return of second-rower Tom Fisher will only bolster St Greg’s already strong line-up.
He was missing from the school’s opening round game, which saw them handed a shock 24-18 loss by Hunter Sports.
St Greg’s coach Tom Morrison said he was “pretty disappointed” with the teams’ “ridiculously poor completion rate” against Hunter.
Their preparations have included going back to basics and, with the assistance of academic high-flyers Fletcher and Guymer, they have done a 180 and are now “running at full steam for the first time this year.”
