Patrician Brothers, Fairfield have wasted no time in asserting their plans for back-to-back Peter Mulholland Cup titles.

The reigning champions demolished the returning Matraville Sports High School 56-0 in front of a roaring crowd.

Jesse Williams claimed a massive four tries for Patties, including a nearly full-field run to the line late in the second half, and said the team knew a result like this was coming.

A couple of blunders from the champs were easily remedied, with turnovers redundant thanks to Patties’ clinical defence, but Williams said they made ‘cutting down errors’ a big focus to improve for the second half.

“We needed to focus on completing sets and just holding that ball,” Williams said.

“We could have scored double that without the errors.”

Other key contributors to the massive scoreline were Jeziah Tua’au and Chad Daniels, both planting two each.

Corey Leigh and Archie Riley split conversion duty, but weren’t able to supply maximum points.

Illawarra Sports High School will be next up for Patties, after they take on Erindale College on Thursday for their first round match.

Despite a drought-breaking year in 2022, Patrician Brothers, Fairfield are refusing to get ahead of themselves as they prepare for the first challenge in their Peter Mulholland Cup title defence.

“We’re keen to just play some good footy and grow as a team,” assistant coach Josh Morgan said.

“Winning is obviously a great thing, but we want more than that as well.”

The reigning champions will take on Matraville Sports High School on Tuesday, who return to the competition after last competing in 2019.

Their opening clash will be streamed LIVE at Cabramatta’s New Era Stadium from 6pm on KommunityTV as part of our season-long coverage of the Peter Mulholland Cup.

“We didn’t really have an off-season,” Morgan said.

“We had 30 years without a trophy, and now the hunters become the hunted, I guess.

“There’s a lot of pressure, but the boys take it in their stride”

Senior player Bailey Myers said ‘everyone’s excited to finally get on the field’.

“Everyone‘s ready to go and can’t wait for round one,” Myers said.

“It’ll be a tough competition, but we know what to do.”

Illawarra and Erindale College, who play next Thursday, make up the rest of the group.

Round two matches will be played on Wednesday, June 7 and feature Erindale against St Pats and Matraville entertaining Illawarra.
