Peter Mulholland Cup finals series tries

Eight months after Patrician Brothers, Fairfield ended a title drought that dragged back to the halcyon schoolboy days of Greg Alexander, the Peter Mulholland Cup is back for 2023, bigger and better than ever.

Four new teams have been added to the elite schoolboys competition, including Central Coast Sports College and Matraville Sports High School as well as Victorian duo Mount Ridley Secondary College and Victoria University Secondary College.

The expansion of the Peter Mulholland Cup includes an all-Victorian pool for the first time as the NRL aims to widen its development footprint south of the border.

The illustrious competition is set to be streamed LIVE through KommunityTV, with round one matches in NSW kicking off on May 17 when Holy Cross College, Ryde take on Bass High School.

The competition has included an illustrious roll call of players who have gone on to successful careers in the NRL, including the Broncos’ Payne Haas (Keebra Park) and two-time premiership winner Nathan Cleary (St Dominic’s College).

NRL School Participation and Projects Coordinator Jono Dallas said the league invests heavily in the competition.

“As a lot of these kids have links with junior pathways and NRL clubs, it’s fantastic that they are so supportive of school competition” Dallas said.

The Cup also heavily endorses education as a priority, with students only allowed to compete if they maintain 90 per cent attendance, and are enrolled to finish year 12.

“The focus of this competition is promoting education and positive behaviours in young students, As opposed to just highlighting their rugby league talent,” Dallas said

KommunityTV’s coverage of the NRL Schoolboys Cup will also include Queensland’s top tier competitions with round matches from the Langer Trophy, Aaron Payne Cup and Dolphins Cup culminating in the Phil Hall Cup Queensland final.

The coverage will also include the National Schoolboys Cup final between the winner of the Phil Hall Cup and winner of the Peter Mulholland Cup, which was won by Ipswich State High last season. The national final will be held at the redeveloped Allianz Stadium in September.

All of the action will be available to watch LIVE with KommunityTV from May 17.
