Gabriel Satrick has reached the highest heights in schoolboys footy but it was a single moment last year which has spurred his rapid rise.

There was a moment at the end of last year’s Langer Trophy campaign where everything changed for Ipswich State High gun Gabriel Satrick.

The boy from Yarrabah, who gave up everything he knew and a comfortable life back home to chase an NRL dream, realised what he was doing wasn’t cutting it.

The 17-year-old described it as not just a change of routine, or game plan, he believed it was an entire mindset shift.

One that has put him in rarefied company.

The dynamic dummy-half capped off his incredible breakout schoolboys league campaign on Wednesday when he was named the Peter Sterling Medallist as the best player in the NRL Schoolboys Cup this season.

The medal, which is determined by points system across the entire finals series, winners list reads like a who’s who of rugby league royalty including Sterling, Ben Elias, Greg Alexander, Jason Taylor, Adam Reynolds and in more recent years Payne Haas, David Fifita and Tom Dearden.

The medal win capped off a fantastic year for Satrick which included winning the NRL Schoolboys Cup with Ipswich, the Australian Secondary Schools Championships with Queensland and being named in the Australian Schoolboys team which tours Fiji next month.

But by his admission, it took hitting rock bottom before he could rise to the top.

“Last year, we lost in the semi-finals (of the Langer Trophy) to Marsden (State High), I felt so bad about it,” Satrick said.

“I had to change that.

“My whole mindset changed, I did everything 100 per cent, and I worked as hard as I could. I had a really big pre-season, I wanted to get my fitness up and just work hard.

“It feels good (to be where I am), it is hectic.”

Each day as he slogged it out in the unforgiving Queensland heat over the summer, it didn’t take much for Satrick to stay motivated.

He had a devoted family 1500 kilometres away who had sacrificed everything to give him a chance.

“My mum and dad would be very proud of me, they sent me down here crying to chase my goal. I did this for them,” he said.

“They couldn’t make it down (for the grand final), because of work and stuff. But I know they would have been watching from home. The whole family would have been together watching from one house.

“I don’t know when I get to go back home, but I know everyone will be there when I do.”

Ipswich State High coach Josh Brethereton couldn’t hide his pride in the playmaker who was a key part of their 32-6 triumph over NSW juggernaut Patrician Brothers Fairfield.

“He is the discovery of the year, he has had an unbelievable season and should be immensely proud of what he has achieved,” Brethereton said.

“To have his name as a Peter Sterling Medallist, is just an incredible thing. When you go back and look at the list of the names on that medal, it is very high class and he has just joined rare air as far as schoolboy footy is concerned.”
