Two years, two teams, two golden point semi-finals.
In almost a replica of their 2024 playoff, The Grange and Victoria University Secondary have battled out another Storm Cup thriller on Thursday.
And for the second-straight year it was The Grange who came out on top to win through to the grand final where they will once again face reigning premiers Hallam.
Both Storm Cup semi-finals were exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.
Livewire centre Texas Esra-Saluni was the hero, capping a terrific performance and comeback by fending off a defender and finishing acrobatically in golden point extra time.
It came after star Vic Uni hooker Lockyer Azile-Foliola looked like he would win the game at the other end, only to be chased down by a brilliant Esra-Saluni tackle.
The Grange then went the length of the field to win the match.
Earlier, fullback Wivenshalom Tyrell-Tupuo scored two of four straight tries for Vic Uni to give them a 20-10 advantage at half-time.
The leaders then got off to a dream start in the first set after the break when Azile-Foliola set up Anaias Jones-Teao to crash through the middle.
But The Grange refused to give up.
Daniel Moananu dragged defenders over the line with a show of individual strength before five-eighth Maze Tearoa-Wharerau used a brilliant step to slice through and score under the sticks to bring them back within a try.
It looked to be all in vain when Vic Uni crucially hit back with a set play off the scrum to put Leong Punefu over on the right side.
But again The Grange had other ideas, coming back into the contest once again through second-rower Teapaina William to make it 26-30.
Vaiolini (Petelo) Taukatelata then tied up the scores in dramatic fashion as he wove back through traffic and sent the match to golden point.
From there both sides had opportunities and errors in extra time before another brilliant run from Taukatelata drove The Grange downfield for Esra-Saluni to finish it off.
Replay: Hallam College v Mount Ridley College
In the earlier semi-final, Mt Ridley proved no match for unbeaten Hallam in a 78-0 demolition.
The reigning premiers shared the scoring around as they cut through the opposition defence with ease to march on to the grand final in style.
Hallam and The Grange, who faced off in last year’s decider, will now meet under lights at Seabrook Reserve on Thursday, July 24 to decide the 2025 champion.
PREVIEW
Victoria University Secondary College will look to the heavens as they aim to turn the tables on rivals The Grange College in the Storm Cup semi-finals on Thursday.
The clash will be part of a massive finals double-header exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV, which also includes the sudden-death semi-final between the unbeaten Hallam College and Mount Ridley.
While The Grange has had the wood over their rivals in recent years, Vic Uni coach Tony Adam is confident his side can spring an upset as long as the conditions keep playing into their hands.
Victoria University, who haven’t beaten their rivals since their run to the Storm Cup title two years ago, will welcome back Melbourne Storm Jersey Flegg debutant Lockyer-Azile Foliola for the all-important semi-final.
“He’ll make a big difference to us, he didn’t play against the Grange (first up),” he said.
“He touches the ball first and gets us around the park, defensively he’ll stiffen up the middle a lot.
“It will give the boys a lot of confidence knowing he is playing.”
It also allows Adam to unlock another key player, Elijah Po-Ching, by getting him out from behind the ruck.
While the coach said the weather being wet might help them, it means nothing if his team doesn’t turn up.
“We’ll be working hard to get the ascendancy,” he said.
“But we need to be playing well across the park.
“You’ll see a very committed side and if they do the little thins well they’ll give themselves a chance to win.”
The Grange head into the clash with a few injuries including one to star outside back Matt Kereti.
Kereti, who almost single-handedly won the Storm Cup for his school last year, will be a big loss to the team.
The Grange coach Shannon Love said the side was confident it can match Victoria University and make back-to-back grand finals.
“We’ve got to make sure we play safe footy (if it is wet),” he said.
“We’ll try to kick the ball early, play a territory game and get the upper hand defensively.
“They’ve got some unbelievable players so we’ll try to create a plan to stop that (their forwards) but given the wet conditions it’s not going to be easy.
“We’re looking forward to that challenge.”
The other semi-final sees Hallam take on Mount Ridley with Hallam looking to make its fourth-straight Storm Cup decider. The school is the most-decorated nursery in the modern era having won two of the past three titles.
Mount Ridley will start as outsiders but were able to match Hallam for 50 minutes in the last meeting between the sides a fortnight ago.
The side will be hoping to stay in the contest longer to complete the upset this time around.
