Replay: NRL Schoolboy Cup - Grange College vs Hallam Senior College

Hallam College has caused a massive upset, claiming an emphatic 38-10 victory against The Grange in a Victorian NRL Schoolboys showdown on Wednesday.

Competition newcomers The Grange ran rampant over Hallam College in their last meeting in the Victorian qualifiers, but Hallam produced a stirring recovery on Wednesday after trailing 10-0 in the first-half.

Hallam’s powerhouse front-rower Jeremiah Neli was unstoppable for the navy and red visitors, controlling the ruck in the No. 8 jersey and setting up a brilliant try for his older brother, Josiah, in the first half.

The Year 11 student put the victory down to a “personal” response from the last meeting against their Victorian rivals.

“All the boys took the last game against The Grange really personal, so we knew we needed to get the win today and I’m grateful we pulled it off,” Neli told News Corp.

“Working next to my brother and having the chance to play shoulder to shoulder with him has been really good.

“I feel confident about moving on to the next job and I think all the boys are pretty pumped for the next round.”

In the Round 1 match between two powerhouses of Victorian schoolboy football, it was The Grange who opened the scoring through star hooker Suliasi Prescott, followed closely by centre Shan-Ty Fatuleai.

But Hallam were quick to fight back with a four-pointer through five-eighth John Faoa to ignite the point-scoring spree from the visitors.

And before the visitors could take a breath, Josiah Neli scored a double to put the visitors up 18-10 on the stroke of half-time.

In the second half, the floodgates reopened and Hallam College continued to pile on the points with a double from star fullback Ryhlis Hohepa.

And in the end the visitors, drawing on their previous Schoolboys Cup experience, were too clean and ultimately too classy for the newcomers, winning convincingly.

PREVIEW: Big showdown in all-Victorian clash

Victoria’s busiest two hookers will square off in an enthralling NRL Schoolboys Cup home clash on Wednesday.

Victoria’s top two rugby league schools, The Grange and Hallam College, will go head-to-head in Round one of the NRL Schoolboys Cup after both schools punched their ticket to the top-tier competition in the Victorian Qualifiers.

The dual between the two Victorian rugby league nurseries will be live streamed by News Corp at 11am, Wednesday at The Grange College.

Hallam Coach Jamie Fardell said he is preparing for a “battle of the two No. 9’s” as his side will be looking to contain The Grange’s star hooker Suliasi Prescott.

“Prescott will be the key player we’ll be trying to shut down, we knew that going into the last game and it was disappointing they couldn’t do anything about it,” Fardell told NewsCorp.

“Our key player and hooker Josiah Neli was out last game and he’s back now so it’ll be a battle of the two No. 9’s.”

The hosts will be the favourites heading into the clash after defeating Hallam College 32-18 at their last meeting but Fardell said his side is hopeful they have learnt from the previous battle.

“After our last meeting we reflected on the whole situation and tried to work on some individual skills and some fitness work so we’re hopeful we can bounce back in a more productive manner than we did last time,” he said.

“We’d love to win this game and take some confidence through to playing Illawarra next turn in Wollongong.”

The Grange Coach, Shannon Love said his side will be “focusing on the one percenters” heading in to their Round 1 Schoolboys clash.

“The boys have been getting their training sessions done, continuing to learn and hopefully that puts us in a position where we can compete against Hallam and the other big schools across the country,” he said.

“It’s also really good we’ve got a couple of games under our belt from the qualifiers. Looking back at the videos I’ve seen as a squad, we’re gelling together quite well now.”
