Hunter Sports High (Lake Macquarie) 9 defeated Xavier Catholic College (Ballina) 0

Lake Macquarie’s Hunter Sports High are the kings of Northern NSW after they defeated Xavier Catholic College (Ballina) 9-0 in the Bill Turner Cup Final.

Captain Alex Nunes set the scene from the start, using his speed along the left wing to put Hunter on the attack. The goal didn’t eventuate, but it came two minutes later when Ryles Harper capitalised on a fortuitous rebound.

Much of Hunter’s drive forward was initiated by Bowen Hine and Rhys Butler while Noah Miller showed superb control under pressure.

Kye Schumacker scored the green and white’s third goal after just 15 minutes, and they took a four goal advantage to the break after Xavier’s most promising opportunity sailed wide as the halftime whistle sounded.

A classy Max Cooper header in the 41st minute was one of Hunter’s best, as they went on with the job with a five goal second half.

Xavier were best served by busy captain Jacob Miletic and Tom Rutledge, who never gave in despite limited opportunities.

Hunter coach Scott McCarter praised his team after full time.

“Today was a big step up in performance, the boys gained a lot of confidence out of today,” McCarter said.

“We had our sights set on the national finals, but you’re only one bad day away from being kicked out, so I’m very pleased because I know the boys have plenty of potential.”

For Xavier Catholic College, coach Steve Edmonds said the event was a major step in the school’s development.

“It’s been a fantastic couple of days, this is the best team we have produced, so it is a massive achievement for the school,” Edmonds said.

“I’m proud of the way the boys carried themselves. The Bill Turner Cup is known as the best schools competition in the country, so to get this far, I’m proud of the boys and glad they enjoyed the experience.”

Central Coast Sports College (Kariong) 8 defeated All Saints College Maitland 1

Central Coast Sports College (Kariong) have beaten All Saints College Maitland 8-1 to take out the Northern NSW division of the Bill Turner Trophy.

Coming off Tuesday’s comprehensive semi-final victory, Central Coast continued their goal spree, as the girls in black raced to a 5-0 halftime lead.

With a game built on composure and accurate passing, the girls from Kariong were able to build pressure, but it was their speed on the wings that continued to turn around the All Saints defence.

Ava Carlson and Famailten added another two goals for Central Coast before the break and the procession continued with another two in the nine minutes after the restart.

“We played against a team with quality players today, so we had to show them respect,” said Barrett.
