Kauter scored the first after breaking into the backfield to get one-on-one with Newcastle keeper Riley Letherbarrow, before he set up the second with a brilliant pass across the face of goal.

It came in the form of star midfielder Lauren Harris who latched onto the end of a booming free kick from the halfway line to nail the match-winner.

Fullback Pippa Dodd stepped up to take the free kick, and despite the distance to goal, had no other thought then send it long and let her stars up front do their thing.

The ball bounced over Mackillop College keeper Maya Perry and onto the waiting left boot of Harris who made no mistake.

St John Paul College coach Josh Moore said a strategic shuffle in his line-up, which involved Dodd and Harris, was the key to unlocking their path to the national semi-finals.

“We moved Pippa from left back up until to defensive midfield and it really paid off for us,” Moore said.

“It gave us two really good options in attack with Lauren moving forward and Pip coming into that space.

“We saw so much good stuff come out of that pairing.

A crafty bit of work from Merewether High striker Ella Morrison, deflecting a dangerous corner into the back of the net, has helped the side clinch their consolation final over Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School 2-1.

It was a game that had it all, a goal in the first minute, a Tim Cahill-esque boxing match with the corner post and a penalty shoot-out which looked odds on to go the distance.

Great Lakes goalkeeper Riley Letherbarrow proved the hero for the Tuncurry troops, forcing two shots wide to win the semi-final 2-2 (4-2).

It was a valiant effort from the Great Lakes side who had to fight their way from behind twice during the contest to force the final into extra time.

Lindisfarne shocked their rivals from the opening whistle with Jake Letters finding the back of the net in the opening minute.

While Steven McGuinness drew Great Lakes level only minutes later with a slick breakaway goal, when Lindisfarne striker Oscar Mellet snuck the ball past Letherbarrow’s inside shoulder early in the second half it looked like the Tweed giants would run away with the contest.

But a crucial penalty goal midway through the second half to Wade Williams levelled the scores again giving Great Lakes a chance to fight their way into Wednesday’s final.

Harris had earlier set up the first of two goals for star striker Jayda Harris with a scintillating long ball into the box, but then it would be the midfelder’s turn to celebrate cleaning up the crumbs on two attacking corners to put her side ahead by three goals.

Lindisfarne, who had opened the scoring through striker Charlie Weigand, refused to die wondering fighting back with two late goals including a breakaway effort to Asha Poole in the final five minutes, but it was too little too late for the girls from the Tweed.

PREVIEW

Qualifying teams into the Northern NSW finals of the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy is no mean feat, and the significance of the moment isn’t lost on Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School.

The Tweed school will feature in both the boys and girls division of the prestigious football tournament in what they hope will become a regular occurrence.

Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar Schools head of sport Damien Clucas said a concerted effort has been made to build the school’s program up to an elite level, one they hope can rival the best in the state.

“It’s a fantastic achievement. We’ve been working hard up here and pushing hard to become a football powerhouse,” he said.

“We draw a lot of the big Sydney schools in some of our knockout competitions for the opens, and we want to be able to meet them and beat them.

“There’s been resources put into the program and the benefits are showing.”

A school can have all the resources in the world, but if there’s no physical investment from students it amounts to nothing.

That’s far from the case at Lindisfarne with the two divisions having their sights firmly set on success.

“We get a good buy-in from our students and there’s a good attendance at training,” Clucas said.

“There’s a nice attitude and feel within the group. Both teams are pretty resilient.”

Indeed that resilience will be put to the test in high-pressure games and the chance to advance to the next stage.

Clucas has confidence in both divisions and believes they have what it takes to keep their dreams alive.

“The boys have come from behind quite a few times. The girls haven’t really been tested yet but that will change pretty quickly,” he said.

“We’d really like at least one and preferably both to be hitting the Lake Macquarie semis. We’re going to get to Coffs Harbour early, get a good sleep and get stuck in. We’re going there to do a job.

“The girls will be without their captain, but there is some good depth there and that should help.”
