A handful of teams headlined by a Victorian powerhouse have already proved themselves serious contenders after an exciting opening day of the U14 Australian Club Girls Basketball Championships.

Nunawading Spectres are certainly one of them after they trumped Townsville Flames 81-28 with a thrilling, fast-paced style.

Mackay Meteorettes has kept Queensland’s hopes alive, having won both games by huge margins.

They beat Western Australia’s Rockingham Flames by over 40 points, winning 81-40, and Adelaide’s Sturt Sabres 64-29.

The team’s No.8 Isabel Smith was particularly on fire, landing 25 points against the Perth side, with Maggie Thorburn close behind with 22.

Another team from Queensland to watch is the Southern District Spartans and their two games on Monday against Canberra and Manly should be riveting viewing.

Norwood Flames made a big statement on the girls competition with a 47-26 victory over Melbourne Tigers.

The South Australian side led 29-12 at halftime and, despite the Tigers hitting back hard in the second half, they had enough in hand to win comfortably.

Norwood next play at 10.30am on Monday morning against Western Australian side Willetton Tigers.
