Queensland North boys will look to ‘invade the paint’ with a rapid style of play at the Basketball Australia U16 National Championships, which start this weekend in Bendigo.

Coach Tim Duroux outlined the team’s workloads, strengths and tournament goals as they look to build on last year’s seventh-place.

“This is a true Queensland North side, we’ve got a bit of mongrel,” Duroux said.

“We’ll be a team that runs the floor hard. We’re a strong driving team, so we’ll keep the court spaced and if defenders want to come and collapse on us, we’ve got shooters out on the perimeter as well.

“We’ll spread the load and different days will have different scorers and that will be a strength of our team, we won’t rely on one player.”

Captain Cooper Currie (Mackay) will lead the charge as the point guard and floor general of the team.

Combo guard Keenan Williams (Cairns) is expected to be a scoring threat throughout the tournament.

Capable of slotting in at either guard position, he will line-up at shooting guard to allow Currie to thrive as the playmaker.

Duroux said small forward Jaylen Mitchelhill is blessed with remarkable athleticism.

“He’s starting to get above the rim. He has strong driving, finishing ability and in the last few months his shooting has really improved, he’s outstanding.

“For a 15-year old to be a consistent dunker already is really impressive.”

Treyce Ciantar (Mackay) is an aggressive yet smart defender who hates to be beaten one-on-one.

Ciantar will be the defender coach Duroux will turn to to shut down the premier opposition offensive players.

The 202cm Kobi Teasdale (Cairns) is a shot blocking machine.

Most young players struggle to not get caught in foul trouble but Teadale is disciplined to know how to defend the paint and keep the whistles silent.

The versatile big man can play power forward, while also capable of being a menace at the centre position.

Duroux said William Imhoff (Cairns) has become a coach’s favourite.

“I’m not sure how many minutes he will play, he’ll be in the rotation but he’s a smart high IQ basketballer.

“He’s a guard who will have defensive assignments but he’s been shooting the hell out of the ball at the moment.
