The Spectres put themselves well in control of the contest early with a 25-0 opening quarter against Whittlesea and from there were in cruise control.

Backing every individual was the key to under 18 girls success, according to Bulleen coach Michael Brookens.

The Boomers broke the game open in the second half to run out comfortable winners against Knox on Monday afternoon.

Speaking after the game, Brookens said was “immensely proud” of his team.

“I try my best and instill a lot of confidence in every kid,” he said.

“Every shot, they take I back because it takes confidence to take shots. There’s no such thing as a bad shot for me.

“And I think they understand how much I value them as individuals and how much I care about them.

“I want to be successful and whatever they give me out there, as long as you’re competent in decision making, I’m happy with what you’re giving our team.”

Brookens said the second half surge came on the back of a relaxed approach after the main break.

Lily Carmody, the grand final MVP, played a big role in breaking the game open.

“I think the first half was mostly jitters for us - feeling out the other team,” Brookens said.

“We knew they were going to come at us. There’s a couple of players on that team that kind of missed out the state campaign. So it was a bit personal for them.

“So we knew we were going to take their best shot early, but we could say sustain those runs that we knew that we had enough depth to overrun them in the second half.”

REPLAY IN THE PLAYER ABOVE

Nunawading has completed a stunning second half turn around to take out the under 18 boys National Junior Classic.

After trailing by double figures early in the third, the Spectres rallied to turn the game on its head against Knox.

They eventually took out the third quarter 24-9 to lead by six points at the final change.

Grand final MVP Tiernan Stynes sparked his side into action with several long range threes.

Meanwhile, point guard Heath Batten dazzled with his dribbling moves and ability to finish inside despite being one of the smaller players on the floor.

Batten finished with 17 points while Oscar Dunn also had 13 as the other Spectre in double figures.

“It’s been a hell of a weekend,” Nunawading coach Jason Manton said in the post-game presentation.

“The support from the crowd has been amazing.”

Despite going down, Knox had several impressive individual performances of their own.

Fraser Roxburgh had 23 points before fouling out as Luke Fennell added 18.

Before handing out his team’s silver medals, Knox coach Tim Rapp paid tribute to his side’s efforts.

He described Nunawading as a “classy group”.

“You took the fight to us (and) wanted it more,” Rapp said.

“Our guys did a great job. Nobody expected you to be here.

“The sum of the parts is always greater than the individuals.”

“We had really good pieces of the weekend and we asked them to get better every game, which they did, and they saved the best for last, so yeah, I’m really really proud,” he said.

“Jesse taking the charge is his go to - the little stop. We send him out to do some big jobs.

“It was just a moment where he stood up, all of our guys had those across the weekend.

“We’ve got some great leaders on our team. We’ve got the vocal guys and the guys who lead with actions. You know what you’re going to get from everybody one through 12.”

Ryder Cheesman was named the grand final MVP to cap off a stunning weekend.

Meanwhile, Zane Windsor showed off his inner Steph Curry with seven threes off the bench.

“We know Ryder can come out and get 20-30 every night but his challenge has been about bringing his teammates into the game, which he is doing very well,” Jewell said.

“He’s getting ready to go on to a bigger stage and a national stage. Hopefully there are there are big, big things for him to come.”

U16 girls

Replay: National Junior Classic - Eastern Mavericks v West Adelaide (U16 Girls)

West Adelaide under 16s coach Jimmy Alexander couldn’t have predicted the roller coaster ride to the National Junior Classic title.

The Bearcats took out the prestigious crown with a 53-35 win over the Eastern Mavericks on Monday morning.

Alexander had a player break her thumb in the week leading into the tournament while another sent a Covid scare through the camp, but she eventually tested negative.

“The girls overcome it and stepped up big,” he said.

“We’ve missed the travel to this tournament in the last couple of years, we’ve missed the hard competition, so it really means a lot to win this tournament.

“I think it was 1994 last time we won one of these gold medals so it’s good to put the club back on the map.

“Watch West Adelaide in the future.”

Defence was a key part in the Bearcats win as they stifled the Eastern Mavericks in the second half.

“Every team we play against we aim to keep them under 40 points to win a basketball game,” Alexander said.

“We managed to do that for the majority of games this weekend.”

Sophie Barker was named the grand final MVP as Coco Hodges led the way with 19 points.
