Twelve months after Illawarra Hawks were crowned national champs, Central Coast will look to follow suit - and they certainly have the form on the board.

They claimed the Junior Premier League title with a two-point win over Penrith Panthers in August. Two months earlier they took care of business in the John Martin Country Cup, beating Illawarra by 44 points in the final.

They will face Canberra, Western Australian side Cockburn Cougars and host club Casey Cavaliers in their opening three games before the tournament splits into Championship and Shield sections.

Coach Chris Ohlback said it’s a huge honour for the team to play on the national stage.

“It’s not often they can get this sort of opportunity,” Ohlback said.

Central Coast Rebels are playing at the nationals in Melbourne.

“There’s only 24 teams across Australia that actually get to play in this tournament, and they’re going as the only team representing country NSW.

“And no doubt they’ll probably come up against girls that are going to be future Opals and Olympians so it’s just an amazing opportunity for them.”

One of the girls to watch in Melbourne is Lara Tillot, who was a stand-out during the JPL season with an average of 11.37 points-per-game and was also named grand final MVP in the John Martin Country Cup.

But Ohlback said what sets these girls apart is their bond and chemistry both on and off the court.

“It’s one of our strengths that they’re so close,” Ohlback said.

“We don’t have any infighting or anything like that, but it’s also a negative because they don’t want to go too hard against their friends at practice.

“They have a great friendship and love for each other and they’re a very special group, that’s for sure.”
