BA Schools Championships: Knox Grammar, Westfields Sports leads Sydney charge with golden run (School Championships)

WITH the finals of the Basketball Australia Schools Championships well underway, a pair of Sydney schools have led the way. WATCH THE REPLAYS of the fantastic performances.

SYDNEY schools completely owned the U20s top divisions on the final day of the Basketball Australia Schools Championships on the Gold Coast.

An undefeated campaign was capped off by the Westfields Sports women, who came away with a commanding 75-45 defeat of Marsden SHS.

A scintillating 21-0 run that stretched over the first and second quarter set the tempo for the game, as they raced out to a 29-4 lead.

The classy Sydney outfit pushed the advantage out to as much as 36, putting the exclamation mark on a flawless tournament.

It was then backed up by Knox Grammar, who overcame Hillcrest Christian College in a tight 57-51 encounter that went to overtime.

In what proved to be a much closer contest, Knox led at every change, including by five coming into the last term.

Their advantage was erased midway through the final term, with Hillcrest taking a slender two-point buffer inside the final minute.

Knox remained calm, with star big Will Mortimore levelling things up to force the extra period.

Jeremy Pan-Cassin knocked down a huge three, giving Knox a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

A spirited comeback from Barker College fell agonisingly short against Rowville in the U17s Girls Division One final.

Trailing by double digits, Barker fought back hard to get within a point down the stretch, before falling short 50-48 in a nailbiting clash.

DAY THREE RESULTS

THE Basketball Australia Schools Championships action heated up on day three on the Gold Coast.

Newington College’s Championship Men campaign suffered a cruel blow in the first round of the finals, with a late comeback thwarted by Southport.

They trailed by nine with less than two minutes to go, before going down by just one point.

Westfields Sports continue to stamp their authority as teams to beat in the Boys U17 Div 1 and Womens U20 Div 1 with another undefeated day.

Steven Hall dropped 37 points for the U17s in a phenomenal display.

Despite the Scots U20 Div 3 Men going down to Willetton, Remy Davis Warrington maintained his stellar form with a 36-point effort.

DAY TWO RESULTS

DAY two of the Basketball Australia Schools Championships is in the books and it was another productive day for Sydney schools.

Newington recovered from a heavy defeat to improve to 2-1 in the Championship Men division.

Westfields Sports continue to fire in the Womens U21s Division One with two commanding wins to stamp themselves as the team to beat.

Their U17s Division One boys had a strong day as well with a pair of very solid wins.

DAY ONE RESULTS

A NARROW win to a Championship contender has highlighted the Sydney charge on the opening day of the Basketball Australia Schools Championships.

The Newington College boys had to fight off a charge, but ultimately had enough in the tank to escape with a 75-69 win over Willetton Senior State College.

40 SYDNEY ATHLETES TO WATCH AT BASKETBALL EXTRAVAGANZA

With the Basketball Australia Schools Championships on the Gold Coast underway, Sydney schools are in the midst of a huge tournament.

It’s one of the year’s biggest sport live streaming events and has attracted schools from all over the country.

We take a look at 40 of the young men and women from Sydney metro schools ready to make their mark.

JOEL STOVOLD (Barker 15 Div 1)

Stovold brings an athletic pedigree to the team, having represented at PSSA level in shot put and also plays rugby union.

FINN WHYMPER-WILLIAMS (Barker 15 Div 1)

The Norths Bears representative played in the D-League for the U16s Metro Boys and looks to have an abundance of talent.

ASTON MASELLA (Scots 15 Div 1)

Looks like he will light up the court, having previously won a 3x3 National Championship. Has the moves and can get a bucket.

JOSHUA BOYLE and OLUWAKOREDE OLUTAYO (Scots 15 Div 1)

From the North Coast and the pair carving it up down in Sydney now. Both represented at the D-League.

HUGO FLATMAN (Shore 15 Div 1)

Part of the Manly-Warringah representative system after previously representing in the NSW DAP.

CODY DALLIMORE (Reddam 15 Div 2)

A St George junior representative who will take up a leadership and scoring role within the Reddam team.

JAMES HEWITT (Shore 17 Div 1)

Shaping as a real X-factor player for Shore in the top division, and has the ability to catch fire.

KODY DAVID WARRINGTON and EDWARD JOHNSTONE (Scots 17 Div 1)

Two more players who have been shining at a 3x3 level, that unpredictability and finesse can work wonders for Scots.

TRASEL RONE (Westfield Sports 17 Div 1)

We’ve seen glimpses of his ability, highlighted with an MVP season for the City of Blacktown Storm previously.

RAPHAEL ALMEYDA (Westfield Sports 17 Div 1)

A walking bucket who will keep the score ticking over for Westfield Sports. A handy player in the lane.

JESSE KAMITI (St Dominic’s 17 Div 2)

A Penrith Panthers representative who adds a touch of class to the side. A leader among the side.

CALEB LEAO (Trinity Grammar 17 Div 2)

The point guard will run the show for Trinity Grammar. He has tremendous vision and can dish out assists.

ERIC DOWNES (Blue Mountains Grammar 17 Div 3)

Helped the charge of the Lithgow Lazers at the Western Junior League Finals. Brings crucial experience to this division.

RORY RICHARDS (St Augustine’s 17 Div 3)

Been in the St Augustine’s basketball program for years now and continues to provide a great output.

HUGH LUCAS (St Augustine’s 17 Div 4)

Another who has been in the program and his rep experience with Manly-Warringah will come in handy.

SAXON MCWILLIAMS (Kings 20 Div 1)

Only in Year 10 but the combo guard has worked his way into the firsts. A Sydney Comets rep with a bright future.

BAILEY THOM (Kings 20 Div 1)

By the time the tournament is finished, many will know his name. A NSW representative, a 3x3 champion and has great height for a young point guard.

BRIAN ANSUH-YEBOAH (Barker 20 Div 1)

The Penrith representative has a lot of strings to his bow, can play both guard positions and is an electric talent.

HARRY LIUBINSKAS (Knox 20 Div 1)

A guard from Norths that can steer the ship for Knox. Able to play well on both sides of the ball.

JESSE EDWARDS (Trinity Grammar 20 Div 1)

A long-time representative with various NSW teams, the guard from the Shire is among the best player’s in this division.

BRANDON SALIS (Shore 20 Div 1)

Another young Sydney talent who has continued to represent his state, and with another year of schooling, Shore has a good one for next year as well.

NOAH WEBB (St Dominic’s 20 Div 1)

The Penrith big has a huge frame, and he’s been able to use it in his NSW Metro U16s campaign. Has the potential to be special.

FINN POTTS (St Augustine’s 20 Div 2)

Lined up in the U16s for Manly-Warringah and was very solid. Has no problems measuring up to older opponents.

BOL DIING (St Ignatius 20 Div 2)

The Norths talent is confident and backs himself. Not the biggest but plays with heart and is a likely type.

XAVIER ISTOMIN-MONROE (St Andrew’s Cathedral 20 Div 3)

A Sydney Comets big who brings the size to St Andrew’s Cathedral, and will attend the National Performance Camp next year.

JACK LEVINSON (Scots 20 Div 3)

Been a part of the Scots program for a while and that bodes well for team chemistry in a winnable division like this.

CORIN MONTGOMERY-SMITH (Northern Beaches Secondary 20 Div 3)

An overall talented athlete with previous experience in touch footy. Now a Manly-Warringah rep and very experienced for division three.

OLIVER KESBY (Redlands 20 Div 4)

Brings a well-rounded resume for this grade, including a NSW jersey and 3x3 National Championship.

JACK VANASEK (Knox 20 Div 4)

Has a Manly-Warringah pedigree and could prove to be a surprise packet if Knox can progress.

WOMEN

EMILY WEBER (Blue Mountains 17 Div 1)

Part of the Penrith Panthers junior development system and will take the reins of an up-and-coming group.

KIERA HUDSON (Barker 17 Div 1)

Has the potential to be one of the best players in the division. A member of the NSW Country U16s team and in the Country U18s development program.

LUCY MEAD (Barker 17 Div 1)

Got the call up to represent Australia in Guam recently and her versatility on the court makes Barker a genuine title contender.

JASMINE RINTOUL (Reddam 17 Div 2)

Has spent time with the Sydney Comets and that alone can see her shine in a tough division two.

EVA OSBORN (Redlands 20 Div 1)

A supremely talented player with stints for NSW Metro U16s and Norths, as well as some 3x3 experience as well.

JESSIE-MAY HALL (Westfield Sports 20 Div 1)

Playing up in the U20s, such is her talent. An Australian U15s representative who is a genuine star of the future.

KIRA-MAY FILEMU (Westfield Sports 20 Div 1)

Another Westfield Sports young gun who is playing up. A Samoa rep and a crucial part of their charge for a championship.

YVETTE VOLK (Pymble 20 Div 2)

Was included in the NSW Metro U16 squad, a testament to the star power the Norths junior brings to Pymble Ladies College.

ALICE HILLSDON (Pymble 20 Div 2)

Playing above her years but chosen on her ability and willingness to compete. A previous D-League member with Basketball NSW.
