Twenty years ago former Magpie Jason Cloke stood and marvelled as Lions legend Jason Akermanis booted Brisbane to a third-straight AFL premiership.
Akermanis tore the 2003 AFL grand final against Collingwood apart with five goals.
Two decades later Cloke again had a front-row seat as he watched the former Brownlow Medallist boot home six goals on the Sunshine Coast.
It’s just, this time, he was on the right side of the ledger.
The grand final rivals teamed up on Wednesday, along with former Lions premiership winner Robert Copeland, to help Queensland’s Over-40s men to a dominant 23.15.153-0.0.0 win over South Australia at the AFL Masters National Carnival.

“It was about 20 years ago that Akermanis was kicking them over my head and now I’m handballing it to him so he can kick it over someone else’s head, which is nice,” Cloke said after the win.
“It’s perfect conditions and it’s what the carnival is all about to have a bit of fun while having a kick.”
Cloke still plays in a masters competition on the Gold Coast while Akermanis, a four-time all-Australian, is on double duty on the Sunshine Coast as he scouts talent for the Australian Masters side.
The former Lion will coach the Australian side on its tour of Ireland in March.
“This is probably my first time since under 17s that I’ve played for Queensland so it’s really cool,” Akermanis said.
“It’s a great concept and I’m also here to see which guys are going well and who is putting their hand up for the Ireland tour.”

Copeland, who won premierships with the Lions in 2001 and 2003, said he enjoyed giving Akermanis ‘a spray’ out on the field.
“I’d just add to what the other boys said because it really is a great experience to play footy with or against those players we were with all those years ago,” Copeland said.
“Aker just wasn’t in the right spot a few times so I decided to give it to him.”
It is a historic week at the AFL Masters National Carnival in Maroochydore, with more than 1700 athletes, the most in the carnival’s history, taking to the field.
Every match of the tournament has been exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.
The AFL Masters National Carnival will go into a rest day on Thursday, before finals action heats up over Friday and Saturday.
