They might not know too much about their opponents, but the Sydney Swans Academy knows it has plenty of talent to challenge the Coates Talent League’s best.

The girls will face off against the Murray Bushrangers looking for their second straight win after getting the better of the Dandenong Stingrays in the opening round.
Meanwhile the boys will kick off their season against the Western Jets.
Speaking ahead of the trip to Melbourne on Friday, Sydney Swans Academy coaching director Leon Cameron said there were several lessons the groups would learn in the coming weeks.
“We’re going into a bit of the unknown because of the geographical situation we find ourselves in,” he said.
“When we turned up to our first game last weekend, we weren’t too sure what to expect but it was important we went out there and put on a good show.
“Travelling and playing footy is a challenge in itself. Everyone will be excited to get on the plane but we’ve also got to put it in perspective that we’ve got a job to do when we arrive in Melbourne.

“It’s always an interesting challenge to try and get that balance right.
“We’re hoping to come down there and turn the game into a good spectacle. We want people to walk away and say ‘the Sydney Swans Academy has some really exciting talent coming through’.”
In the Round 1 victory over the Stingrays, the Swans had a range of impressive performers headlined by AFLW Academy members Marnie Robinson and Olivia Morris.
Morris finished with 16 disposals while Robinson collected 14 of her own.
“I thought it was the best game Olivia has played early in the year,” Cameron said.
“We’ve also had games against the other academies and she’s been impressive throughout.
“Last week was one of those games where everyone contributed. Asha Turner Funk, who is one of our 19-year-olds, was really impressive.
“So were Ella Parker and Gabrielle Eaton, We were rapt with how we went and we got a little bit of confidence out of that game.”
The boys team will be led by AFL Academy members Caiden Cleary, who is the side’s vice-captain, and Lachlan Cabor.
Cleary is coming off a big 2022 where he won a premiership with Sydney University’s under-19s, was selected for the Allies and played in the AFL Futures game (which brings together the best prospects in the country).
He has been part of the Swans Academy since the under-10s division.
“The boys have had a really good preparation with games against GWS and Gold Coast in the last few weeks,” Cameron said.
“It’s going to be an interesting challenge and we can’t wait to showcase the high quality young men and women we have in our program.”
