Sans Doute will be leaving it late to snatch victory in the Carlyon Stakes at The Valley

The speed is certain to be hot in the Carlyon Stakes at The Valley and jockey Michael Dee will be biding his time aboard 1000m specialist Sans Doute.

Emerging sprinter Sans Doute could be the beneficiary of a hot speed in the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) at The Valley on Saturday.

Five of the eight starters, all drawn inside Mark Walker-trained Sans Doute, will challenge for the early lead including the $2.80 favourite Bold Bastille.

Jockey Michael Dee must get his timing spot on aboard Sans Doute, a $5.50 third elect with TAB behind Mornington Glory ($3), to finish over the top of the field.

“We’ll sit just off them, sit back, bide our time and hopefully can be making up good ground at The Valley on Saturday,” Dee said.

Walker dominated The Valley sprints last season with incomparable Imperatriz.

Sans Doute, who has placed twice at The Valley previously in 1000m races, strung four on the trot last campaign, all at Flemington, to go from Benchmark 70 to Listed winner.

Sans Doute just missed winning the Group 3 Hawkes Stakes in Adelaide last start in April.

Dee, who galloped Sans Doute at The Valley last Tuesday, said the five-year-old has the potential to build on her stakes record.

“She’s still got to keep improving, but I’m sure there’d be another stakes race in her,” Dee said.

“She galloped nicely (last Tuesday) but she was just by herself at the Valley … it’s hard to get a decent guide, she had a good look around, a little blow.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if she needed the run to be honest but she should be running well.”

Sans Doute has won and placed twice in three previous first-up runs.

Dee has eight rides at The Valley on Saturday including Lordship in the first and Holymanz in race 7.

Lordship pulled hard last start at Flemington, only his second Australian start, but held third.

“If he relaxes he should be right there,” Dee said.

Lordship is a $4 second favourite with TAB behind Dashing Duchess ($1.90), a dominant last-start Valley winner.

Holymanz is a $5.50 second elect in the 1523m Open Handicap.

The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper finished sixth first-up at Flemington, beaten 1½ lengths behind Gentleman Roy, who has won again since.

Dee won the Geelong Classic on Holymanz last campaign.

“It looks a good race for him, a lot of those horses in there are probably at the end of their prep I guess and he’s one you could say is the fresh horse in that race,” Dee said.
