Renowned non-winner Brereton gains killer instinct in Queensland with Tony Gollan as winning treble looms

A former $1m yearling who struggled to win in Victoria is now striving for three wins in a row in Queensland for new trainer Tony Gollan.

Brereton had forged a reputation as a non-winner, however Tony Gollan believes the former high-profile colt has found his winning groove in Queensland.

The champion trainer is renowned for turning one man’s trash into another man’s treasure, and believes the now gelded speedster has all the attributes to move through his grades in the Sunshine State.

The Rosemont Stud Alliance paid $1 million for Brereton as a yearling, where he managed just one win in 15 starts for former trainer Peter Moody in Victoria.

He is now two-from-two under Gollan, who said he makes the perfect off-season galloper for him and isn’t concerned about the prospects of a wet track at Doomben on Saturday after a week of heavy rain in Brisbane.

“It was always going to be the right time of the year for him,” Gollan said.

“He is a nice little horse, he has a real will to win about him now, which is something that has been lacking for him.

“That can happen when you drop them back in ground and you get them a kill, they want to win again, and this is where we are at now.

“He is well weighted, he drops half a kilo off his win the other day.”

Brereton is a $4 favourite with TAB to continue on his winning ways in the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1200m) on Saturday.

It comes as Gollan is happy to shake off a Sydney shocker for his high-profile filly Barbie’s Sister in the QTIS 3YO Fillies Handicap (1100m).

The stakes winner was beaten 22 lengths by Tarpaulin at Randwick last month on a wet track, however Gollan is confident it will be a different heavy track to what she will experience at Doomben.

“It was a different wet track down there, she trialled OK on a heavy track at Doomben,” he said.

“Sydney had no grass at all and was full of sand, she got a bump straight out of the gates and had to travel 12 hours down there to cop that.

“The inside pad at Doomben is the best pad to race on, it is the seven, eight, nine-metre pad which is the worst one at the moment, it has copped the biggest hammering.

“We are on the fresher ground, so I am glad the rail is in.”

The sister to former star galloper Outback Barbie is $1.50 to bounce back to winning form on Saturday against just a handful of rivals.
