Kelly Schweida is happy to adopt the role of giant-killer with his filly El Morzillo as she again aims up against some of Australian racing’s biggest names.

El Morzillo has hardly missed a fight in her short career and has been a hardluck story a number of times, but Schweida is determined to get a stakes-level victory to her name as she lines up in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m).

The filly heads to Sydney as an underdog, but it is a position Schweida is familiar with and says he is happy to aim up against the best again.

“It is crazy, she has raced Golden Slipper winners in the autumn, then we come here to Queensland run into Broadsiding in the winter, one of the best colts I have seen for a while,” Schweida said.

“You get those years and you just have to deal with it.

“We will go down there to Sydney again and see where we are at.

“The only problem is that it is a really strong race again, she has aimed up to some of those better ones before so we will again.”

Connections are hoping for a strong tempo on Saturday in order to give the filly the best chance of making ground late in the piece.

“I think she is better ridden quiet, so I think 1200m with a bit of speed on will suit here,” Schweida said.

“Her best runs have been in Sydney when things have happened and forced her to go back and run on.

“There hasn’t been a lot of time off for her, she has been up for a while but we have got a barrier so we will test the water down there.

“She only had one trial simply because we haven’t had a lot of time.

“You have these visions of going through the fillies series which goes to 1400m and 1600m, but we will see where we are at after Saturday.

“We are just trying to chase a bit of black-type with her.”

El Morzillo is a $10 chance.
